Malaysia's Trade Performance in 2009

The Minister of International Trade and Industry (MITI) announced that Malaysia’s exports in December 2009 expanded by 9.2% to RM54.67 billion from the preceding month. This was the highest monthly exports for 2009. Imports increased by 3.4% to RM42.58 billion. As a result, a trade surplus of RM12.1 billion was recorded in December 2009, making it the 146th consecutive month of trade surplus since November 1997. Total trade grew by 6.6% from November 2009 to RM97.25 billion. |

The Minister of International Trade and Industry (MITI) announced the trade performance for November 2009. Total trade for the month amounted to RM91.25 billion, a decrease of 6% from October 2009. Exports were valued at RM50.07 billion, a decline of 7.7% from the preceding month (October 2009: RM54.26 billion). This was the second highest monthly exports for 2009. Imports declined by 3.7% to RM41.19 billion in November 2009. |

TRADE IMPROVED IN OCTOBER 2009 Total exports in October 2009 registered a strong growth of 15% from September 2009 to RM54.28 billion, the highest monthly exports recorded in the last ten months. The strong growth was led by exports of electrical and electronic (E&E) products. Imports increased by 12.9% to RM42.81 billion in October 2009 and total trade increased by 14.1% to RM97.09 billion. Trade surplus of RM11.47 billion was recorded in October 2009, making it the 144th consecutive month of trade surplus since November 1997. |

Total trade in September 2009 was valued at RM85.21 billion, a decrease of 0.9% from a month ago. Total exports declined by 1.1% to RM47.24 billion, while imports decreased by 0.7% to RM37.97 billion. As a result, a trade surplus of RM9.27 billion was recorded in September 2009, making it the 143rd consecutive month of trade surplus since November 1997. |

Exports in August 2009 registered RM47.83 billion which was 2% lower compared with July 2009, while imports at RM38.26 billion was also lower by 6.6%. As a result, total trade decreased by 4.1% from a month ago to RM86.09 billion. Despite this decline, the export value in August 2009 was the second highest recorded in the first eight months of 2009. |

Malaysia’s exports continued to expand in July 2009, to reach a value of RM48.87 billion, an increase of RM3.79 billion or 8.4% from June 2009. This was the highest monthly export value ever recorded in the first seven months of 2009. Imports amounted to RM41.06 billion, an increase of 14.2% from a month ago. A trade surplus of RM7.81 billion was recorded in July 2009, making it the 141st consecutive month of trade surplus since November 1997. Total trade was valued at RM89.92 billion, an increase of 11% from June 2009. |

In June 2009, Malaysia’s exports increased by 5.1% to reach a value of RM45.1 billion from RM42.92 billion in May 2009. This was the highest monthly export value registered in 2009. Imports increased by 9.4% to RM35.99 billion. A total trade of RM81.09 billion was recorded, 7% higher from May 2009 with a trade surplus of RM9.12 billion, making it the 140th consecutive month of trade surplus since November 1997. |

Malaysia’s exports in May 2009 expanded by 4.5% to RM42.95 billion compared with April 2009. Imports decreased by 2.3% to RM32.93 billion. This has resulted in a total trade of RM75.88 billion, 1.4% higher from a month ago. A trade surplus of RM10.02 billion was recorded in May 2009, making it the 139th consecutive monthly trade surplus since November 1997. |

On a month-on-month basis, exports for April 2009 declined by 5.6% to RM41.12 billion, while imports increased by 8.8% to RM33.76 billion. Higher imports of intermediate and capital goods, contributed to an increase in total trade of 0.4% in April. The decline in exports for April 2009 was largely attributed to lower exports of liquefied natural gas (LNG), crude and refined petroleum products. |
