MATRADE BOOSTS KNOWLEDGE ON DOING BUSINESS WITH TURKEY AT SEMINAR

MONDAY, 27 JUNE, 2016 KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian companies were exposed to the knowledge of doing business with Turkey at a Malaysia-Turkey Business Seminar titled Exploring Business Opportunities in Turkey, organised by Malaysia External Trade Corporation (MATRADE). The event which took place today at Menara MATRADE was also aimed at highlighting export opportunities in Turkey.

The seminar was organised in conjunction with MATRADE’s first participation in the 85th International Izmir Fair in Izmir, Turkey this 26 to 31 August 2016. Apart from accelerating the exports of Malaysia to Turkey, the participation is targeted at promoting the brand of Malaysia in Turkey and to encourage Malaysian players to take advantage of the existing Free Trade Agreement between Malaysia and Turkey in expanding their market share in the country.

During the seminar, Malaysia-Turkey Business Club (MTBC) which was launched in April 2016, has also launched its MTBC portal. The portal is one of the initiatives from the Club to facilitate trade from both countries. The portal will feature contact details of members, information on doing business with Turkey as well as any business opportunities in Turkey.

According to MATRADE’s Chief Executive Officer, Dato’ Dzulkifli Mahmud, there are still a lot of untapped opportunities in Turkey for Malaysian companies. “With MATRADE assisting them, Malaysian companies can have access to market intelligence on Turkey and plan a strategic approach in using Turkey as a gateway to Europe and North Africa. Additionally, the Turks can also utilise Malaysia as an entry point for ASEAN,” he said.

He added that events such as the seminar helps participants to better understand the challenges, rules and regulations in doing business with Turkey.

In 2015, Malaysia’s total trade with Turkey amounted to RM5.65 billion. Malaysia’s exports to Turkey had increased by 54.5 per cent from RM2.46 billion in 2014 to RM3.8 billion in 2015. While imports were valued at RM1.85 billion in 2015 compared to RM710.7 million in the previous year.

For the period of January to April 2016, trade with Turkey were recorded at RM2.28 billion. Exports stood at RM1.92 billion while imports were valued at RM357 million.
