The Minister of International Trade and Industry (MITI), YB Dato' Sri Mustapa Mohamed announced that Malaysia's total exports in January 2011 rose by 3.0% to RM54.04 billion compared with January 2010. This was the highest exports value ever recorded for the month of January. Imports grew by 13.5% to RM44.85 billion, resulting in a total trade of RM98.89 billion, an increase of 7.5% from the corresponding month in 2010. A trade surplus of RM9.19 billion was registered, making it the 159th consecutive month of trade surplus since November 1997.
Compared with December 2010, exports, imports and total trade in January 2011 all decreased by 5.5%.
EXPORTS IN JANUARY 2011
The increase in exports in January 2011 of RM1.59 billion from a year ago was largely contributed by higher exports of refined petroleum products, palm oil, crude petroleum, transport equipment, crude rubber, chemicals and chemical products, machinery, appliances and parts, rubber products and liquefied natural gas (LNG).
