Trade Performance : May 2011 and January - May 2011

The Minister of International Trade and Industry (MITI), YB Dato' Sri Mustapa Mohamed announced that total exports in May 2011 increased by 5.4% to RM55.09 billion compared with May 2010. Imports grew by 5.6% to RM46.61 billion resulting in total trade of RM101.70 billion, an increase of 5.5% from a year ago. A trade surplus of RM8.49 billion was recorded, making it the 163rd consecutive month of trade surplus since November 1997.

On a month-on-month basis, exports in May 2011 was lower by 4.7% while imports decreased by 0.4% and total trade declined by 2.8%. The decline in exports in May 2011 was mainly due to lower exports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and refined petroleum products.

Total trade during the period of January to May 2011 increased by 8.0% to RM507.24 billion, compared with the corresponding period in 2010. This was contributed by exports of RM279.25 billion and imports of RM227.99 billion. Exports registered an increase of 6.2% while imports expanded by 10.3% compared with January to May 2010, resulting in a trade surplus of RM51.26 billion.

EXPORTS IN MAY 2011

The increase in exports in May 2011 of RM2.81 billion from a year ago was largely contributed by higher exports of palm oil, chemicals and chemical products, crude rubber as well as processed food.
