TRADE BREACHES ONE TRILLION MARK

The Minister of International Trade and Industry (MITI), YB Dato' Sri Mustapa Mohamed announced that Malaysia's total trade in the first ten months of 2011 had breached the one trillion mark, with a value of RM1.052 trillion, increasing by 8.8% from the corresponding period in 2010. Despite the challenging global trading environment and slow down in advanced economies, exports increased by 9.1% to RM577.16 billion while imports rose by 8.5% to RM474.72 billion, resulting in a trade surplus of RM102.44 billion. Growth in trade was supported by regional markets in Asia.

Exports maintained its steady growth momentum recording a value of RM63.57 billion in October 2011, the highest monthly exports ever recorded, increasing by 15.8% compared with a year ago. Imports was higher by 4.6% at RM50.35 billion while total trade expanded by 10.6% to RM113.91 billion.

Compared to the month of September 2011, total trade, exports and imports in October 2011 were higher by 5.7%, 8.3%, and 2.6%, respectively.
