| The
Regional Centre for Arbitration in Kuala Lumpur
provides a system for settlement of disputes for
the benefit of parties engages in international
trade, commerce and investment with and within the
region.
The Centre, a non-profit organisation, was set
up under the auspices of the Asian-African Legal
Consultative Committee (AALCC), an inter-governmental
organisation comprising 45 governments of the
Asian and African region, in co-operation with
the Government of Malaysia. Its main functions
are:
- To promote international commercial arbitration
in the region.
- To administer international arbitrations under
the Rules of the Centre which are the UNCITRAL
Arbitration Rules with certain modifications.
- To render assistance in the enforcement of
awards.
- To render advice and assistance to parties
who may approach the Centre.
- To provide other options for the settlement
of disputes such as mediation/conciliation under
the Conciliation Rules of the Centre.
The rules of the Centre allow a great deal of
flexibility in the conduct of proceedings of the
arbitration and leave a wide discretion to the
parties with regard to the choice of arbitrators,
the place of arbitration and the applicability
of the procedural rules.
