The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia also known as
the IEM. It is a professional learned society serving
more than 15,000 members in Malaysia, overseas and the
communities in, which they work. It was formed in 1959
and was admitted a member of the Commonwealth Engineers
Council in 1962. The Institution is a qualifying body
for professional engineers in Malaysia.
The Corporate member of the Institution can apply to
the Board of Engineers, Malaysia (which is a registration
body) for registration as a Professional Engineer, which
will entitle him to set up practice. The qualification
standards are determined by the Council of the Institution.
The Institution is one of the few professional engineering
institutions in the world, which represents all disciplines
of the profession, and is thus able to take a broad
view of the professional scene.
Currently, the IEM has five (5) official representatives
on the BEM out of a total Board membership of seventeen
(17).
The objectives and purposes of which the Institution
is constituted are to promote and advance the theory
and practice of engineering in all its disciplines and
to:
- Raise the character and status and advance the interests
of the profession;
- Increase the confidence of the community in the
employment of recognised engineers by admitting to
the Institution only such persons who have adequate
- knowledge of both the theory and practice of engineering.
- Promote honest practice, prevent malpractice and
settle disputed points of practice and ethics;
- Arrange lectures, exhibitions and conferences, seminars,
courses;
- Collect and disseminate engineering information;
- Encourage the study of engineering and improve the
general and technical knowledge of persons engaged
in the profession;
- Originate and promote improvements in legislation
ar and its administration by deputations, submissions
and representations.
Professional Interviews
Professional Interviews for members aspiring to attain
PE status are held at regular intervals throughout the
year. In addition, Professional Interview Workshops
are conducted at private organisations and universities
to explain the interview procedures to students and
qualified professionals.
Educational and Social Activities
A long list of educational activities such as in-house
technical and management talks, conferences and seminars
in and outside the country are conducted for members
at nominal charges. IEM also extends invitations to
members to visit factories and project sites so that
members can observe first-hand engineering applications.
Meetings with engineering associations in other countries
are also organised regularly. Social gatherings such
as dinners and dance, golf competitions and welfare
activities are also planned for the benefit of members.
Publications
IEM distributes a monthly bulletin called Jurutera,
which features articles on infrastructure projects,
engineering developments and the latest on-goings in
the Institution. It also distributes a Quarterly Journal,
which highlights academic research and findings.
Library
The IEM library is well stocked with books, magazines
and CD-ROMs on various topics such as engineering, management
