Pantai Medical Centre (PMC) is the first private tertiary hospital in Malaysia. Established in 1974, the flagship hospital of Pantai Holdings Berhad was initially a modest 68-bed hospital with 20 medical specialists. Todate, the hospital has close to 130 Consultants in various medical and surgical disciplines. On 5th March 1999, a ground-breaking ceremony was held marking the start of a RM100 million construction to build an adjoining 8-storey hospital building and three basements built on a land area of 10,999 sq m.

In 2001, with the successful commissioning of the new eight-storey building at PMC, the hospital boasts a capacity of 320 in-patient beds with a gross built-up area of 50,000 sq m. Leading the construction of the new hospital building was turnkey contractor, THB-IJM Joint Venture Sdn Bhd, a company specialising in the development and construction of hospitals. In March 2002, PMC became the first private tertiary hospital to be bestowed the prestigious Baby Friendly Hospital Award by the World Health Organisation in association with UNICEF. The award was presented to the hospital by the former Health Minister, YB Dato' Chua Jui Meng.

Visitors to the new building will be impressed with their first step into the hospital as they walk on carefully chosen rubberised flooring imported from Germany. It is specially manufactured to dampen noise. This new feature sets PMC apart as the first hospital in South East Asia to use rubberised flooring. A visual pager system was installed so as to lessen noise within the building. The new building is colour coded to make it easier for visitors to find their way around. The new building is inter-linked to the old building via an air-conditioned walkway. A link bridge especially for patient transfer connects the old and new blocks at the first floor.
