38 // MATRADE Annual Report 2019 In 2019, Malaysia’s trade with North America recorded an increase of 5.9% to RM172.10 billion. Exports to North America rose by 6.1% to RM100.07 billion, while imports grew by 5.6% to RM72.02 billion. Major trading partner was the US which accounted for 96.0% share of total trade with North America, followed by Canada (4.0%). Malaysia’s total trade with the US in 2019 increased by 6.1% to RM165.22 billion compared to RM155.76 billion in the previous year. Exports to the US which represented 96.5% of Malaysia’s total exports to the North America, increased by 6.3% to RM96.54 billion. The expansion NORTH AMERICA was contributed by higher exports of manufactured goods, growing by 7.2% to RM93.81 billion and represented 97.2% of Malaysia’s total exports to the US. The growth was supported by increase in exports of E&E products, wood products, optical and scientific equipment as well as manufactures of plastics. Major export products to the US were E&E products, optical and scientific equipment as well as rubber products. Imports from the US recorded an increase of 5.7% to RM68.68 billion and the major imports were E&E products, chemicals and chemical products as well as machinery, equipment and parts. Exports to Canada decreased by 0.5% due to lower exports of E&E products, palm oil-based manufactured products as well as machinery, equipment and parts. However, double-digit growth were recorded for exports of processed food ( ↑ 54.0%), iron and steel products ( ↑ 22.9%) as well as wood products ( ↑ 13.3%). E&E products, rubber products as well as wood products were the major export products to the country. Imports from Canada rose by 2.2% to RM3.35 billion. Major imports were chemicals and chemical products, E&E products and transport equipment.
