102 MA T R A D E A N N U A L R E P O R T 2 0 1 7 KEY SECTOR PERFORMANCE Construction & Business Services The construction sector in Malaysia is expected to grow at 10.3% per annum with a contribution of RM327 billion or 5.5% of GDP by 2020 Snapshot Three construction sector components synonymous with Malaysian firms are: • General or building construction (i.e. property development of residential and commercial buildings) • Heavy and civil engineering construction (i.e. roads, highways, railways, bridges, tunnels, sewers and pipelines) • Industrial construction (i.e. manufacturing plants and power generation plants) Key Potential Malaysian contractors are well sought-after for overseas construction projects backed by their proven quality, constant innovation and competitive costing in delivering their jobs. Overseas projects are usually secured via open tender bidding or direct negotiations with project owners. Malaysian contractors have made inroads into global markets by successfully undertaking and completing projects in India, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, China, South Africa, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Libya and Sudan, to name a few countries. These construction companies place great emphasis on superior quality and strive for construction excellence in key areas of architecture, engineering design, consultancy services and landscaping services. Malaysian companies are creating a niche in selected construction areas such as water proofing, crack repairing and maintenance, roofing and tiling services, among others.
