36 TOWARDS THE FUTURE OF SUSTAINABLE EXPORTS IMPORT PERFORMANCE In 2022, Malaysia’s total imports grew by 31% to RM1.294 trillion. The three main import categories, according to end-use, contributed 71.9% to the country’s total imports and are as follows: exports. • Intermediate goods valued at RM706.55 billion, or 54.6% of total imports, increased 64.6% from 2021, driven by increased imports of primary fuels and lubricants. • Capital goods (RM120.23 billion or 9.3% of total imports) increased 32.5%, attributed to higher imports of nonautomotive capital goods. • Consumption goods (RM104.02 billion or 8% of the total imports), grew by 40.3%, resulting from increased imports of processed food specifically for household consumption. ASEAN, China, Taiwan, the US, and the EU were Malaysia’s primary import sources. Collectively, these markets comprised 68.8% of total imports. Manufactured goods represented 83.2% of Malaysia’s total imports. The main import items for manufactured goods were: • E&E products grew by 25.1% to RM393.47 billion, representing 30.4% of total imports; • Petroleum products, RM145.64 billion, 11.3% share (↑ 62.6%); • Chemicals & chemical products, RM115.51 billion, 8.9% share (↑ 19.6%); • Machinery, equipment and parts, RM89.38 billion, 6.9% share (↑ 30.2%); and • Manufactures of metal, RM63.85 billion, 4.9% share (↑ 17.8%).
