50 TOWARDS THE FUTURE OF SUSTAINABLE EXPORTS SEMICON West is a leading international trade exhibition held in San Francisco, California, the US, for the semiconductor and microelectronics industry. SEMICON West 2022, the 52nd edition, was attended by industry players from the global E&E supply chain and served as a crucial platform for introducing the latest products and technologies, including electronic design automation, electronic component manufacturing, semiconductor assembly and testing outsourcing (OSAT), Light Emitting Diode (LED), Micro Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS), photovoltaic, and nanoelectronics. A total of 381 exhibitors from 36 countries participated in the exhibition, attracting 4,222 visitors. Malaysia’s participation in SEMICON West is part of MATRADE’s continuous efforts to promote semiconductor-related products and services in the US, Europe and nearby markets. In 2022, the US was Malaysia’s second-largest export market for E&E, with an export value of RM96.0 billion, representing 16.2% of the total E&E export share. Malaysia was the only ASEAN country with a national pavilion. MATRADE coordinated the participation of six Malaysian companies,in electronic wafer testing equipment, automated optical inspection systems, electronic manufacturing services, and precision machining components. Malaysia’s participation in this exhibition attracted 250 international visitors and 25 trade inquiries for E&E products, semiconductor assembly and testing outsourcing (OSAT), plastic injection moulding, automated test equipment, electronic components, among others. A total of 70 business matching sessions were organised for Malaysian companies involving potential business partners from the US, Canada, Mexico, Singapore, Japan, Taiwan, Germany, the UK, and France. Tokyo Game Show (TGS) is the world’s largest trade exhibition for video games and a significant event for industry stakeholders, including publishers, digital content creators, and gamers. TGS serves as a strategic platform for Malaysian companies to promote products and services related to video game and digital content development. This includes graphic creation, asset and character creation, outsourcing services, translation, and audiovisual aspects. TGS 2022 featured over 600 exhibitors from various countries, including the United States, China, the UK, Finland, and Korea. Well-known Japanese companies like Konami, Square Enix, Bandai Namco, Capcom, SEGA, Sony PlayStation, Koei Tecmo Games, and Happinet also participated. The event attracted over 100,000 visitors throughout the four-day exhibition . MATRADE’s participation in the exhibition, its sixth, was aimed at strengthening Malaysia’s position as a leader in intellectual property creation and promoting Malaysia as the preferred outsourcing destination for animation and video games in the Southeast Asian region. Under the Malaysia Pavilion, MATRADE coordinated the participation of 10 Malaysian companies, including Aeonsparx Interactive, Ammobox Studios, Forust Studio, Hide and Seeds, IXI Creatives, Kaigan Games Entertainment, Magnus Games Studio, Spacesheep Studio, Todak Studio, and Why Knot Studio. Four companies also joined the Online Trial Play session to showcase new video games and provide visitors and publishers with the opportunity to experience the gameplay firsthand. Forust Studio was even shortlisted for the TGS’s Selected Indie Showcase award. A total of 487 business matching sessions were arranged for Malaysian companies with renowned Japanese companies. Prominent Japanese publishers like Koei Tecmo Games, Toei Animation, GungHo, and Tezuka Productions expressed admiration for the capabilities of Malaysian companies and saw potential for collaboration in various aspects of video game development such as graphic creation, platform migration, and outsourcing services.
