The food and beverage sector has been identified as a potential sector, and Japan’s interest in developing Muslim-friendly tourism following major global events such as World Expo Osaka 2025 and the Asian Games 2026 is seen as an advantage for Malaysia to leverage. FOODEX, held at the Makuhari Messe Exhibition Center in Chiba, Japan, from 8 to 11 March 2022, marked MATRADE’s 19th participation, featuring six Malaysian companies alongside three government agencies, namely the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA), the Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC), and the Malaysian Cocoa Board (MCB). Travel restrictions implemented by the Japanese government did not deter the participation of Malaysian companies in this exhibition, where priority was given to exhibitors with agents or branches in the host country. Products promoted at the event included ready-to-eat products, snacks, cooking oil, frozen food, sauces and pastes, halal beverage products, and food ingredients. Malaysian companies successfully established business networks with potential importers, distributors, and local procurement centres. The participation in FOODEX successfully promoted Malaysian brands to over 33,000 local trade visitors. Malaysian companies that took part recorded potential trade inquiries from attending visitors, along with trade meetings organised by MATRADE offices in Tokyo and Osaka.
