61 MATRADE Core Objectives MATRADE Annual Report 2022 EMPOWER TRADE ASSOCIATION (ETA) COLLABORATIONS WITH MINISTRIES/ GOVERNMENT AGENCIES IN 2022 Trade Associations serve as the main propellers for their members in promoting exports, helping to increase the incomes of their members and reduce their dependence on the government, congruent with the aspirations of the National Trade Blueprint (NTBp). As a way to acknowledge the contributions of Trade Associations and their crucial responsibilities as a conduit for information between the public and private sectors, MATRADE launched the Empower Trade Association Programme (ETA) in 2022. The ETA aims to strengthen the export ecosystem and enhance national exports. The programme garnered favourable reception, with 16 applicant associations qualifying for 23 programmes, from the 20 that applied for 35 programmes. In total, RM10.09 billion in sales was recorded from an expenditure of RM3.35 million. New sectors that saw export demand were engineering, construction, pharmaceutical, legal services, quantity surveying, furniture, and franchise & retail. The ETA successfully penetrated non-traditional and emerging markets, such as South Africa, Cambodia, Poland, Mongolia and Timor-Leste (with MoUs signed in Timor-Leste by Malaysia Service Providers Confederation [MSPC], including that for the provision of services in various areas). The success directly benefited 273 Malaysian companies, 213 (78%) of which were MSME. As a result of the increase in manufacturing capacity and creation of new job opportunities, civilians directly benefited from the cascading effect of the programme. The programme helped enhance the capabilities of Trade Associations in supporting the government’s initiatives in boosting exports, particularly given the constraints of the pandemic. It also helped the associations establish a sense of ownership in their commitment to helping their members penetrate the export market, especially in the high-impact oil and gas, chemicals, and energy sectors. The resulting strengthened ties with MATRADE’s overseas offices was seen as a catalyst in rebuilding the economy, aligning with the foundation of Malaysia Madani. ETA ACHIEVEMENTS IN 2022 23 proposals from 16 trade associations approved 273 companies promoted across diverse sectors such as food & beverages, electric & electronic, personal care & cosmetic, franchise as well as construction & related services, via trade associations.
