MTCs are companies with annual incomes from RM50 million to RM500 million (manufacturing sector) and between RM20 million to RM500 million (services sector). According to a report on MTC performance by McKinsey & Company in 2018, MTCs make up 2% of registered businesses in Malaysia, but contribute 40% to the country’s GDP, and employ 16% of the national workforce. Since MTCDP was implemented in 2014, exports for these companies have grown 17 times over to RM17.8 billion in 2021, creating more than 4,00 new job opportunities including skilled and technical positions. In 2022, MTCDP was implemented through two main components: • Development of new MTC (Wave 8) • Ramp-Up Programme for MTCDP Alumni A total of 24 MTCs from various sectors such as electrical & electronics, ICT, machinery, food & beverage, lifestyle, and life sciences were selected for Wave 8 of MTCDP. MTCs applying to join the programme underwent a rigorous assessment process involving the preparation of profiles and company assessment aspects, and engagement sessions with the management of each company to understand their export capabilities and aspirations. MATRADE continues to assist 299 MTCs under the RampUp Programme through targeted intervention, market development initiatives and both virtual and physical export promotion activities. As the domestic supply chain for these MTCs, SMEs have benefited from their growth. Of more than 7,000 SME’s, approximately 75% are engaged in this supply chain.
