84 TOWARDS THE FUTURE OF SUSTAINABLE EXPORTS In 2022, 20 awareness programmes were implemented, including briefings, seminars, information counters, workshops, discussions with the business community and the government, as well as media coverage, with 1,476 participants. Programmes Implemented In 2022, MDG recipient companies generated export sales of RM2.5 billion, in addition to expanding their presence to markets like the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the United States of America, France, China, Germany, Japan, Singapore, Thailand, Australia and Cambodia. 2022 Achievements Percentage of recipients by state Selangor-based companies represented the highest number of recipients (43%) followed by Kuala Lumpur (14%), Johor (10%), Penang and Perak (8%), Pahang (5%), Kedah (4%), and Melaka and Negeri Sembilan each at 2%. Sabah, Sarawak, Terengganu, Putrajaya, Perlis, and Kelantan each constituted 1%. Percentage of recipients based on sector The Lifestyle & Life Sciences sector recorded the highest percentage of recipients (36%), followed by Halal, Food & Beverage, and Agro (29%), E&E, ICT, and Machinery & Equipment (12%), Construction & Business Services (12%), Transportation & Logistics (12%), and Oil, Gas, Chemicals, and Energy (9%). People and Economic Strategic Empowerment Programme (PEMERKASA) In 2021, the government implemented the PEMERKASA programme with an allocation of RM20.0 billion in five main focus areas: 1. Controlling the spread of COVID-19; 2. Driving economic recovery; 3. Strengthening the country’s competitiveness; 4. Implementing regional and community inclusivity agendas; and 5. Transforming the economy. PEMERKASA is based on 20 strategic initiatives, with MATRADE assigned as the implementing agency for the 13th initiative of promoting investments and export markets. This initiative emphasises the penetration of new global markets through the marketing and development of SMEs and businesses. In 2022, 747 companies were placed under this initiative, with an allocation of RM8 million. Moving forwards, under MATRADE, MDG will continue to assist SMEs in exploring export markets, enhancing their competitiveness, and increasing global sales. Companies are expected to explore new markets and strengthen their presence in existing markets. 2023 Projection MDG recipient SMEs have recorded export sales of RM2.5 billion, with a return on investment of 1:222, or RM22 for every ringgit spent. Throughout 2022, a total of 5,710 applications were processed involving 2,614 companies and a fund of RM19.3 million. MDG recipient success stories MATRADE, the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation (MOSTI), and the Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Centre (MGTC) jointly coordinated Malaysia’s participation in Expo 2020 Dubai, which attracted 400 companies. The platform was used to showcase Malaysia as a sustainable destination and major exporting country equipped with green technology and prioritising environmental conservation. A total of 183 companies have made claims under MDG, totaling RM1.42 million.
