smaller plantations and small holders to
participate.
As the world’s second largest producer
and largest exporter of palm oil, this is a
natural opportunity for Malaysia to capture,
with a significant prize. However achieving
full potential will require significant
coordination and cooperation among
multiple stakeholders. The development
of partnerships and partnership structures
between plantation and mill owners is
critical to mobilise the biomass, and
initiatives under the Palm Oil National Key
Economic Area (NKEA) are being used to
accelerate this opportunity.
A new business opportunity has already
been defined for pelletisation capacity.
The launch of an industry consortium Oil
Palm Biomass Centre (OPBC) to catalyse
development and scaling up of conversion
technologies will accelerate the research
and development complementing the
growth of the biomass industry. In addition,
an existing Entry Point Project (EPP) has
been expanded in scope for direct joint-
ventures (JVs) between biomass owners
and downstream technology or chemical
companies.
Since the launch of NBS 2020 in 2011,
initiatives such as MYBiomass (a joint-
venture (JV) between Sime Darby, Federal
Land Development Authority (FELDA)
and Malaysian Industry - Government
Group for High Technology (MiGHT) to
aggregate their biomass), the first batch
of commercial scale biomass pelletisation
plants, completion of multiple government
- industry led international roadshows to
showcase commercialisation opportunities
globally,
visits
from
international
downstream chemical companies to
Malaysian biomass owners, joint-venture
(JV) cluster workshops and numerous
invitations to speak at international
conferences are all testaments of the
government’s focus in creating excitement
and opportunities for the industry through
continual interaction with the industry and
academia. With acceleration of technology
in higher value uses and constant support
and facilitation from the government to
industries, NBS 2020 and the resulting
1Malaysia Biomass Alternative Strategy
Initiative (1MBAS) taskforce have become
a platform to ensure that our nation’s
interest in creating incremental GNI,
higher value industries and high value
jobs from biomass becomes a reality.
