PART 5
CE-Marking
20
Affixing the mark to the product is your responsibility as a manufacturer.
The mark consists of the two letters ‘CE’. In addition to the mark, your
company’s name and address, the product’s serial or type indication,
as well as its production year have to be printed on the product. If a
notified body has been part of the conformity assessment procedure,
the identification number of the notified body has to be mentioned as
well.
Normally, the CE-mark must be put on the product or on its data plate,
visibly (i.e. at the back or bottom of a product), legibly (i.e. in letters
with a minimum height of 5 mm) and indelibly (i.e. in such a way that
it cannot be easily removed). Some product standards use a rub test
with water and petroleum spirits to determine whether the mark meets
this condition. The CE-mark may also be placed in the accompanying
documents if the directive requires these. In some cases the mark
cannot be placed on the product itself because the product is too small.
If this is the case, it has to be placed on the packaging, if there is any,
and on the accompanying documents.
In any other cases in which visibility, legibility and indelibility cannot
be ensured, the CE-mark has to be affixed to the packaging, if there is
any, and to the accompanying documents, if these are required.
The form (size and shape) of the CE-mark is as shown in the figure.
Other pictograms or markings, indicating energy
performance, for instance, or protected trademarks
are allowed to the extent that they do not create
confusion with the CE-mark, and that they do not
reduce the legibility and visibility of the CE-mark. Such pictograms
or markings should be seen as complementary but never as part of
the CE-mark.
