Guide to Malaysia's Fashion Industry - page 7

A significant increase of 25.2 percent was
recorded between 2013 and 2014 with export
value totalling RM4.8 billion from RM3.9 bilion
boosting export of the services sector
while increased exports of manufactured
fashion garments will expand our global
market share in apparels and clothing.
In line with this mission, MATRADE
formulated promotion programmes to
increase exposure of Malaysian designers
in the international arena. It coordinated
their participation in international fashion
shows andorganises specific programmes
such as specialised marketing missions
on design and creative sectors in
conjunction with world fashion events. An
international trade event dedicated to the
fashion industry organised by MATRADE
in conjunction with INTRADE 2014, Kuala
Lumpur was the Malaysia Fashion Week
and FACIT@INTRADE, a business to
business fashion event which has been
planned as an annual event.
Malaysia’s exports of apparels and
clothing have been increasing over
the years. A significant increase of 25.2
percent was recorded between 2013 and
2014 with export value totalling RM4.8
billion from RM3.9 bilion. The growth
was due to increasing orders received
from international buyers as Malaysian
companies gained the reputation of
being reliable suppliers and their products
viewed as being consistent in quality and
are cost competitive.
Malaysia has expanded its exportmarkets
with the addition of more new emerging
markets. The traditional markets were
USA, Japan, Australia, Turkey and China.
However with continuous participation
of Malaysian designers in international
fashion shows and exhibitions abroad,
Malaysian fashion apparels and clothing
have penetrated into the non-traditional
markets such as Brazil, Belgium, France,
Germany and Cambodia.
Top 5 export markets for Textile and
Apparel for 2014 were USA (RM2.2 bil
accounted for 18.3 per cent share), Japan
(RM0.89 bil with 7.5 per cent share),
Australia (RM0.7 bil with 5.9 per cent
share), Turkey (RM0.7 bil with 5.8 per cent
share) and China (RM0.66 bil with 5.6 per
cent share).
Australia continues to have the biggest
export increase in percentage due to the
increase demand for Malaysian Muslimah
wear with the increasing number of
Muslims residing in Australia.
