to become a regional education hub and an

international centre of educational excellence.

Education services will continue to be a focused

sector and a major source of foreign earnings

for the nation. Malaysia’s marketing efforts

target foreign students from around the world

but is largely centred within ASEAN, South

Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Central Asia.

The country hopes to increase international

enrolments to reach 200,000 students by 2020.

Currently, there are more than 120,000

international students studying in Malaysian

institutions of higher learning. There are

31,000 foreign schoolchildren enrolled in

international schools while another 30,000

foreign nationals are pursuing postgraduate

degrees. International students help bring in

RM7.9 billion in foreign exchange to Malaysia’s

economy, and this is expected to swell to

RM15.6 billion per annum by 2020.
