Malaysia has an irresistible number of pull factors - top-notch infrastructure,
easy access to academic sites, political and economic stability, and ready
access to the lucrative Asian market. As a result, a host of medical devices
multinational corporations (MNCs) have set up base in Malaysia to collaborate
with local companies in manufacturing high-demand and high-value medical
devices such as pacemakers, orthopedic products, dialysers, surgical
instruments, medical electrodes, catheters, safety intravenous cannulae,
sutures as well as ophthalmic lenses.
Cognisant of its potential, the government earmarked the medical devices
and equipment industry as a priority sector to develop and promote under
the National Key Economic Area (NKEA). The introduction of seven new Entry
Point Projects (EPPs) related to medical devices is expected to encourage local
players to increase size of market share and profitability, while making Malaysia
even more attractive to global medical devices companies. Concurrently,
Malaysia is looking at building medical device clusters, providing better access
to funding and talent, and strengthening the partnership between research
and medical devices industry to ensure that innovative products are fully
commercialised to capture niche value-added markets in Europe and USA.
The status quo - a strong electronics and electrical support heritage, vast
experience with rubber-based products and access to Asia - puts Malaysia in
a very good position in terms of resource and advantage. As we continue to
enhance our capacity and capabilities, Malaysia is poised to become a world-
class hub for developing, designing and manufacturing medical devices and
equipment for the region and world at large.
