KUALA LUMPUR, AUGUST 30 (Friday): Malaysia strengthened its foothold in Australia by participating in the Franchising & Business Opportunities Expo in Melbourne from 17 to 18 August 2024. The Malaysian pavilion, hosted by the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE), showcased well-known Malaysian brands such as Richiamo Coffee, Smart Reader Kids, Deemcee, Sunbest, Irispro and Craft. These brands represented segments such as food and beverages, education, health and beauty, as well as protective solutions.

In 2023, Malaysia’s year-on-year total trade with Australia in services rose to RM9.6 billion compared to RM7.9 billion. Malaysia’s exports of services recorded a growth of 3.2 percent, reaching RM6.3 billion in 2023, while imports from Australia were valued at RM3.3 billion. According to Jamaliah Jamaludin, the Director of the Construction and Business Services Section, this participation in the Expo further enhanced the visibility of Malaysia’s brands and capabilities in the Oceania market.

“Malaysian exhibitors at this Expo recognised the need to incorporate sustainability practices into their operations as consumers and stakeholders became more conscious of their environmental and social impact,” said Jamaliah Jamaludin. A case in point was IrisPro, which prioritized the creation of energy-efficient window films that not only reduced carbon emissions but also ensured long-lasting performance, minimising environmental impact and supporting sustainable business practices that reduce waste and conserve resources.

“Another interesting company was Deemcee, which committed to reducing its environmental footprint through the strategic implementation of paperless communication systems,” added Jamaliah Jamaludin.

Apart from the Expo, MATRADE also coordinated pre-arranged meetings, business pitching sessions and business networking opportunities for the Malaysian exhibitors.

The franchise sector in Australia covers a broad spectrum of areas, including food and retail, services and professional enterprises, serving a variety of consumer demands and preferences. Australia boasts a robust infrastructure and support networks for businesses, simplifying the process for franchise owners to establish and manage their ventures. Additionally, the climate for growing franchises was enhanced by a transparent legal framework and robust safeguards for intellectual property.

The expo, which was the largest franchise event of the year, took place in Melbourne and served as a one-stop shop for meeting suppliers, advisers, consultants and franchisors from both the public and private sectors.
