MEEC: THE IDEAL SOURCING CENTRE FOR LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL COMPANIES

MONDAY, 13 JUNE 2016, KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) is urging more local business community to utilise the existence of Malaysia Export Exhibition Centre (MEEC) to promote their products and services to global players.

The centre is the biggest and probably the only sourcing centre for both international and local companies in the country. The 4,500 sq meter permanent display centre is located on the second floor of Menara MATRADE and has been in operation since the 1980’s. Since then it has helped trade visitors from many countries to source for the available products and services from Malaysia.

MEEC houses a display space accommodating around 500 Malaysian companies from 30 industries such as food and beverages, plastics products, chemical-based products, automotive parts, electrical and electronics, furniture and fashion products, among many others.

According to MATRADE’s Chief Executive Officer, Dato’ Dzulkifli Mahmud, the MEEC provides various benefits for both local and international companies. “MEEC offers a cost-effective platform for Malaysian companies to showcase their brands to global buyers who visited Malaysia.  Moreover, by congregating all the local brands at this centre, international buyers get to find out the details of Malaysian suppliers all in one place. This will definitely ease their sourcing activities,” Dato’ Dzulkifli said.

Apart from exhibiting Made-in-Malaysia brands, MEEC also functions as a centre for Malaysian and international companies to organise business meetings. The meetings are part of MATRADE’s signature programme called International Sourcing Programme (INSP) where MATRADE helps matched Malaysian companies with international buyers who visited MEEC. The business matching at MEEC is done on a complimentary basis by MATRADE.

Among the international companies that have visited MEEC for their sourcing initiatives include Barclays Bank of Uganda, Tesco, Europe-based Home Retail Group, Metro Group from Germany as well as a business delegation from Al-Westa, Oman and world-renowned marketing guru Philip Kotler. Philip Kotler who came to the centre in 2015 mentioned that the MEEC is one of the best in the world he has ever visited.

In 2015, MEEC received a total of 6,741 visitors as compared to 6,701 and 6,669 in 2014 and 2013 respectively. Throughout last year, 67 INSP’s business meetings have taken place at MEEC. The potential sales generated at MEEC in the first quarter (Q1) of 2016 were RM41.85 million as compared to RM2.03 million in Q1 of 2015.

Also present at the press conference held today was MEEC’s exhibitor, Founder and Group Managing Director of Global Top Technologies (M) Sdn Bhd, Mr. T.T Teoh who shared his experience as an MEEC exhibitor and as one of the local companies that has been matched with an international buyer at MEEC.

A simple ceremony was also organised today to mark a strategic partnership between the CCTV supplier with MEEC, where the centre will be equipped with the company’s locally-developed surveillance system.

Malaysian companies who are interested to display their products and services at MEEC are required to pay a minimal fee of RM 600 for products display and RM 300 for services display, for a period of one year. To be part of MEEC, Malaysian companies must be an export-ready company, produce Malaysian-made products or services or have Malaysian ownership or patent for their brand.
