TUESDAY, 21 NOVEMBER 2023, KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) in collaboration with the Ministry of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives (KUSKOP), SME Bank and Malaysian Industrial Development Finance Berhad (MIDF) successfully led 16 Malaysian SMEs in their export journey to Japan through the Export Acceleration Mission (EAM) to Tokyo and Osaka, Japan.

Out of the 16 participating companies, nine (9) are under the Business Export Programme (BEP), a programme managed by SME Bank in collaboration with MATRADE and funded by KUSKOP.

“BEP is a structured intervention program, accelerating Bumiputera SMEs going for export. As of now, we have onboarded a total of 59 companies that have generated RM123.3 million export sales since the programme’s commencement in 2020,” said Hamdan Mohd Habibollah, Head of Stakeholder Management, SME Bank.

The Malaysian SMEs made a resounding impact during the mission to both cities resulting in potential business opportunities valued at RM15.57 million for sales of food and beverages as well as fashion products. This was made possible through the 185 business meetings held in both Tokyo and Osaka in addition to the companies’ participation in Malaysia Fair 2023 held from 3 to 5 November 2023 in Tokyo.

“This exceptional achievement from our Malaysian SMEs is a testament to the strong interest and confidence Japanese consumers have in Malaysia’s capabilities and expertise in providing high quality Halal food and beverage and fashion products. It demonstrates Malaysia’s ability in enhancing bilateral trade with Japan as well as our readiness ahead of World Expo Osaka 2025,” said Zuaziezie Zulkefli, Trade Commissioner of MATRADE Tokyo.

The companies were enlightened with the abundant opportunities existing in Tokyo and Osaka, updates on the Japanese consumer market as well as an overview of the Japan F&B market through the seminars and market visits arranged during the mission.

The mission also saw the introduction of Nang Ori’s newest product line, Sarawak Black Pepper tea during the Malaysia Fair 2023 event. The product launching was done by Faiiza Mohd Mokhtar, Head of Strategic Alliance, SME Bank which was witnessed by Awaeang Kwasin, Founder of Nang Ori and their Japanese strategic partner.

MATRADE views that the continued efforts under this trilateral strategic partnership is significant as it will open up opportunities for more SMEs to establish their global footprints and to become more resilient in the ever-growing export economy.
