Processed Food Industry
World population is predicted to reach 9
billion by 2050. The demand for food
industry is expected to expand
progressively in view of the increasing
demand, crisis due to shortage in
production as well as the changing trend
of consumers around the world. More
emerging economies will be major food
importers andby 2030 theworldwill need
additional 50%of foodandenergyaswell
as additional 30% of water. According to
the Food and AgricultureOrganisation of
UnitedNations (FAO), demand for food is
expected to increase by 60% between
2005 to 2050.
Over the next few years, the
markets will be driven by consumers’
needs
for
convenience,
creative
product development and continuous
improvements incommercial refrigeration
/freezing technology. In addition, growth
opportunities are expected to pop up in
emerging markets in Asia, Latin America
and Eastern Europe.
Total export of processed food for 2014
was RM16.6 billion. Themainexports were
edible products and preparations (RM5.5
billion), cocoa and cocoa preparations
(RM3.8 billion), prepared cereal and flour
preparations
(RM2.3
billion),
dairy
products (RM1.3 billion) and margarine
and shortening (RM1.2 billion). Malaysia
exported foodproducts tomore than 200
countries. Major export destinations were
Singapore, Indonesia, the USA, Thailand
and Republic of China. ASEAN region
remain as an important export market for
processed foodand it isexpected togrow
particularly to Singapore, Thailand,
Indonesiaand thePhilippines.
China being the world’s largest food
market provide a huge potential for
processed food export growth, based on
the following factors:
Upscale food manufacturers eagerly
look for high quality ingredients that
add value to their products, and
