specialized/process machinery and equipment for specific industries, packaging machines,
plastic extrusion machines and parts and components for this machinery and equipment.
Strong efforts are also being made to attract companies producing M&E for the oil & gas
exploration, photovoltaic and medical industries, metalworking and plastic injection machinery
and production and processing industries.
In order to accelerate its ascent up the value chain, Malaysia is sharpening its focus on
research and development. To this end, the Rasah Machinery and Equipment Technology
Centre (now known as the National Centre for Machinery and Tooling Technology) was
established in 2005 to provide support services in R&D, design and prototyping as well as
technical and engineering support. In the same year, SIRIM set up its Mould & Die Centre
to aid companies in design, development and fabrication of moulds and dies for plastic
injection, die castings and soft tooling. Recently, the Zurah Industrial Park in Rasa, Selangor
- the country’s first fully-dedicated machinery and engineering park - was unveiled to serve
as an integrated hub for local manufacturers.
Regional distribution centers (RDC) and international procurement centers (IPC) were
established to attract international M&E players to set up a regional presence here. These
RDCs and IPCs can undertake after-sales technical services, training of technical resources
personnel, local outsourcing of parts and components and upgrading of used equipment.
Just how successful have these efforts been? Malaysia has already attracted a large number
of manufacturing projects in various sectors, leading to a huge demand for M&E. A host of
multinational corporations have already established their operations here for the manufacture
of M&E and parts or componentfor distribution to the region, cementing Malaysia’s position
as a rising star in the M&E sector worldwide.
In the long run, Malaysia aims to be more than a major regional producer and exporter
of high-technology and specialized machinery and equipment. The government wants to
transform Malaysia into the main distribution centre in the region for all types of machinery
and equipment as well as the centre for maintenance service, refurbishment, reconditioning
and upgrading of machinery and equipment. Looking at its successful efforts, this scenario
looks highly possible in the near future – and no time is better than the present for global
M&E manufacturers to be part of this future.
