WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 2021 KUALA LUMPUR: As part of the continued efforts to promote Malaysian capabilities in the professional services sector, the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) in collaboration with the Malaysia Service Providers Confederation (MSPC) organised an Export Acceleration Mission (EAM) to Yangon, Myanmar.

The hybrid EAM which took place from 9 – 11 November 2021, brought onboard 11 Malaysian service providers in the areas of sustainable architecture in housing and urban planning, building information modelling (BIM), engineering solutions, facilities management, geotechnical engineering, precast concrete construction solutions, erosion control and bio-engineering products, road safety consultancy, scaffolding and formwork solutions.

The mission provided an opportunity for Malaysian companies to expand their footprint in the market and build business partnerships with Myanmar business community amid uncertainty in the business environment due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

A total of 36 online business meetings, 11 interactive pitching sessions, 2 virtual site visits and a technical webinar were conducted during the 3 days event. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between MSPC and the Federation of Myanmar Engineering Societies (Fed. MES) for closer collaboration and enhancing the cooperation on professional services between the two organizations.

The virtual and technical aspect of the EAM was smoothly coordinated with the support provided by the Asia Pacific University of Technology and Innovation (APU) as the technical partner of the programme. APU’s IT facilities and experts had greatly contributed to the success of the virtual business meetings between Malaysian companies and potential clients in Myanmar.

A potential sales of RM22.4 million had been recorded between 11 Malaysian companies and 14 Myanmar firms mainly in the areas of sustainable smart city, building information modelling system and road safety planning. The positive outcome of this mission signalled a good cooperation in strengthening trade and economic ties between both countries.

“Myanmar is an interesting and vibrant market that offers huge business opportunities for Malaysian construction related and professional services as the country progresses towards sustainable urban development. Participating Malaysian companies have unique value proposition to offer to the potential Myanmar partners. Amongst the main areas would be on green smart cities, integrated building design and eco-friendly project management”, said Mr. Idzham Abdul Hamid, MATRADE’s Construction and Business Services Section Director.

Idzham also noted that these services sub-sectors are witnessing good consumption growth in Myanmar due to the awareness of modernisation and preference for higher quality products and services by local clients.
