MATRADE Fortified Penang SMEs in Global Supply Chain Through Benchmarking Programme with Mid-Tier Companies
TUESDAY, 27 FEBRUARY 2024, PENANG: MATRADE (Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation) continues to fortify small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Penang in global supply chain development through Benchmarking Programme with successful Mid-Tier Companies (MTCs).
Through strategic collaboration with Deloitte Consulting, this Benchmarking event with the theme "Global Supply Chain" in Penang that took place on 27 February 2024 at The Light Hotel, Penang, and was attended by 100 participants, mainly SMEs in various sectors. It aims to foster knowledge sharing and collaboration among industry leaders to enhance Malaysia's position in the global supply chain landscape, inspiring growth through exports among the MSMEs in attendance.
This Benchmarking event brought together key stakeholders, including industry experts, and representatives from leading companies across various sectors, to discuss emerging trends, challenges, and best practices in global supply chain management. Participants had the opportunity to gain valuable insights from renowned speakers, engage in interactive panel discussions, and network with peers to explore potential collaborations and business opportunities.

Deloitte Consulting, a leading global consulting firm renowned for its expertise in supply chain management, brought valuable insights and industry perspectives to this Benchmarking Event. Together with MATRADE, Deloitte Consulting facilitated discussions on innovative approaches and strategies to navigate the complexities of the global supply chain landscape effectively.
The benchmarking event highlighted the expertise of Mohamed Shakir bin Basheer Ali, Director at MMK Spices Sdn. Bhd, renowned for his strategic procurement and finance skills; alongside his roles at FMM and Pensutra Alliance Berhad, Mohamed advocates for ASEAN trade. Michelle, Chief Strategy Officer at Fuller Academy, specializes in sustainability and collaborates with Lean Giap Group to offer tailored training in sustainable supply chain practices. Gary Leong, a dedicated member of ViTrox Corporation Berhad, brings over a decade of experience and leads ViTrox's Analytics Intelligence Solutions business unit, driving corporate marketing and promoting Malaysia's manufacturing sector through Industry 4.0. Their contributions enriched discussions on export strategies and sustainable growth, providing valuable insights into regional market outlooks and resilient supply chains.
The "Global Supply Chain" benchmarking event in Penang marked a significant milestone in MATRADE's efforts to support Malaysia's journey towards becoming a regional and global hub for trade and investment. By fostering collaboration and knowledge sharing, MATRADE and Deloitte Consulting aimed to empower Malaysian Mid-Tier Companies to unlock new opportunities and thrive in the global marketplace.
Introduced in 2014 as a key initiative in the Malaysia Development Plan, the MTCDP aimed to accelerate the export growth of MTCs, positioning them as regional and global leaders. Following the success of the programme, the Mid-Tier Ramp Up Programme was launched in 2016 to further propel MTCs' exports and enhance their competitiveness in global markets. MATRADE successfully groomed a total of 58 MTCs in the Northern Region, where 39 of them were from Penang.
Aligned with the MADANI Economy and NIMP 2030, MATRADE is committed to cultivating more export champions and supporting the government's efforts to rejuvenate the Malaysian economy. This involves fostering growth in new sectors while ensuring socio-economic inclusiveness and sustainability.
The MTCDP targets export-oriented MTCs with annual revenues ranging from RM50 million to RM500 million for manufacturing companies and RM20 million to RM500 million for services companies.
