B2B INITIATIVES TO COMMEMORATE THE 50th DIPLOMATIC ANNIVERSARY WITH CHINA TO GENERATE RM2.6 BILLION

THURSDAY, 21 MARCH 2024, KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA: MATRADE, which was appointed as the implementing agency by the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI), to mark the 50th year of diplomatic anniversary with China, will be rolling out 7 key trade programmes this year to deepen economic relations between the two countries.

These programmes are expected to provide Malaysian exporters with market insights, access to Chinese buyers as well as opportunities to establish partnerships.  According to Mr. Abu Bakar Yusof, Deputy Chief Executive Officer (Export Acceleration) of MATRADE, in total MATRADE expects the programmes to generate RM2.6 billion in export sales and benefit more than 500 Malaysian exporters. 2 programmes have been completed and another 5 programmes will be organised for the year. 

MATRADE hosted a webinar on “Strategising Your Market Penetration to China & Hong Kong” on 13 March 2024 featuring all MATRADE Trade Commissioners in China including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu and Hong Kong. This webinar was specially designed aiming to empower Malaysian businesses to gain deeper insights into market trends and dynamics in China and Hong Kong. During the webinar, Mr. Abu Bakar encouraged Malaysian exporters to participate in these forthcoming programmes to capitalise on free trade agreements that Malaysia currently has with China such as Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), ASEAN-China Free Trade Agreement (ACFTA) and ASEAN-Hong Kong Free Trade Agreement (AHKFTA).

MATRADE is currently organising an Export Acceleration Mission (EAM) in conjunction with China Food & Drinks Fair (CFDF) from 19-22 March 2024 at Western China International Expo City, Chengdu, China. The EAM involves 15 Malaysian companies participating in impactful activities, including product displays, business matchings and market study visits. This initiative provides participants with first – hand knowledge of market requirements, demand, trends, competitors and pricing to enhance their food and beverage exports to China.

Malaysia’s participation in China International Small and Medium Enterprises Fair (CISMEF) will be organised in association with the China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology with MATRADE’s support. This programme will be scheduled from 27 – 30 June 2024 in Guangzhou, provides a platform for domestic and international SMEs to showcase trade and collaboration. Malaysia Pavilion will feature sectors like intelligent manufacturing, food and beverage, halal products, fashion, tourism, crafts, gifts, and essential business services.

Malaysia has been selected as the country of honour for the 21st China-ASEAN Expo (CAEXPO), set to take place at Nanning International Convention and Exhibition Centre from 24 – 28 September 2024. This designation underscores Malaysia's pivotal role in fostering trade and partnership between ASEAN and China. The expo will showcase 150 Malaysian companies across various sectors, aiming to generate RM300 million in export sales. The Malaysia Pavilion will feature live streaming and product selection activities to effectively showcase its offerings in line with market trends.

In addition to the mentioned programmes, MATRADE will also lead the Malaysia Pavilion at China International Import Expo (CIIE) in Shanghai from 5 – 10 November 2024, targeting over RM160 million in export sales. CIIE, now in its 7th edition, is a key platform for global enterprises to access the Chinese market, promoting trade liberalisation and international cooperation. Targeted sectors include Pharmaceuticals, Electrical & Electronic, ICT and Education.

The Malaysian National Pavilion at COSMOPROF Asia 2024, commencing from 14 – 17 November 2024 in Hong Kong, is poised to be a dynamic hub showcasing Malaysia’s vibrant beauty and cosmetics industry. Featuring a diverse array of companies, it offers Malaysian businesses access to wide spectrum of products, from natural and organic to high -tech skincare solutions. Beyond showcasing Malaysia’s capability in beauty sector, the pavilion also serves as a strategic platform for networking, fostering partnerships, and tapping into new market opportunities. This highlights Malaysia’s pivotal role in the global beauty landscape.

The Malaysia – China Summit (MCS 2024) which to be held in MITEC, Kuala Lumpur from 17 – 19 December 2024 will be the grand finale event of this series, expected to draw significant participation from local, China as well as ASEAN, potentially records over RM2 billion in trade and investment opportunities. According to Mr. Abu Bakar, Malaysian companies especially micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) may leverage on these programmes to forge connections with premium Chinese buyers and expand their market reach further.
