Following Strong Performance in Dubai, MATRADE to Showcase Malaysian Halal Excellence at MIHAS@Shanghai During the China International Import Expo (CIIE)

KUALA LUMPUR, 31 OCTOBER 2025 (FRIDAY) – The Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) will strengthen Malaysia’s presence in the Chinese market through MIHAS@Shanghai, which will be held from 5 to 10 November 2025 at the National Exhibition and Convention Center (NECC) in Shanghai.

Organised in conjunction with the China International Import Expo (CIIE) – one of the world’s largest trade platforms focused on facilitating import opportunities – MIHAS@Shanghai will feature 250 Malaysian companies spanning key sectors such as Food & Beverages; Agricultural Products; FMCG; Medical Equipment & Healthcare; as well as Business and Financial Services, showcased within a dedicated 2,000-square-metre Malaysia Pavilion, also the largest for any Trade Promotion Organisations.

Participating organisations include federal agencies such as the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development (including its agency MARA), SME Corp, Exim Bank, Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority, Malaysian Technology Development Corporation, Malaysian Pepper Board and alongside state governments from Selangor, Perak, Sabah, Pahang, Penang, Malacca, Sarawak and Perlis.

According to Dato’ Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican, Chairman of MATRADE, the selection of Shanghai is both strategic and timely.

“The global Halal economy is a rapidly expanding sector, extending beyond Halal food and beverages to encompass Halal logistics, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and personal care. This comprehensive market is projected to grow from USD 3.5 trillion currently to over USD 5 trillion by 2030, underscoring the immense global potential. This presents a significant opportunity for Malaysian Halal producers, whose reputation for quality and compliance with international Halal standards aligns well with the growing demand for trusted, premium products in China,” he said.

“Shanghai, as China's cosmopolitan and commercially vibrant city, serves as a strategic gateway due to its advanced logistics infrastructure, strong international trade links and status as a hub for innovation and consumer trends. These factors make it an ideal platform to deepen the market penetration of Malaysian products across East Asia.”

Dato’ Sri Mohd Mustafa Abdul Aziz, the Chief Executive Officer of MATRADE, emphasised that following the remarkable success of MIHAS@Dubai 2024, which surpassed expectations by generating RM2.2 billion in sales, more than double its initial target of RM1 billion. Building on this momentum, MIHAS@Shanghai, the second international edition, aims to generate RM2.5 billion in total trade, marking a significant milestone in MATRADE’s strategy to internationalise and elevate the MIHAS brand.

“We are confident to surpass last year’s sales target, driven by our dedicated International Sourcing Programme (INSP), which facilitates targeted business matching sessions with 100 buyers, including 20 premium buyers from China, alongside participants from India, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Brazil and other markets,” added Dato’ Sri Mohd Mustafa.

As Malaysia advances its economic diplomacy and strengthens its position in the global Halal economy, MIHAS@Shanghai underscores the nation’s commitment to expanding Halal trade linkages and promoting Malaysian products on a global stage.

In 2024, China remained Malaysia’s largest trading partner for the 16th consecutive year, with bilateral trade reaching RM484.25 billion (USD106.06 billion), representing 16.8% of Malaysia’s global trade. For the first nine months of 2025, Malaysia-China trade increased by 8.6% to RM385.71 billion (USD89.29 billion), accounting for 17.3% of Malaysia’s total trade.

In the Halal sector, Malaysia recorded Halal exports valued at RM61.79 billion in 2024, representing a 15% increase from the previous year. China accounted for RM6.25 billion of these exports, positioning it as Malaysia’s second-largest Halal export market, after Singapore.

The internationalisation of MIHAS supports the goals outlined under the 13th Malaysia Plan, which targets RM80 billion in Halal exports, contributing 11% to the country’s GDP. It also aligns with the Halal Industry Master Plan (HIMP) 2030, which emphasises global outreach and innovation as key growth enablers.
