Malaysian Exporters to Learn From the Success of Korean Fashion Wave at Workshop
Tuesday, February 16th, 2016, Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) in collaboration with ASEAN Korean Centre and Korea Fashion Association organised a one-day product development workshop on fashion, apparels & accessories in Menara MATRADE today.
The workshop was aimed at exposing the export opportunities in South Korea for Malaysian companies in the fashion, apparels & accessories industry. Among the objectives of the workshop included; to strengthen the competitiveness of export-ready Malaysian fashion brands; to gain knowledge and skills of the South Korean fashion industry through lectures and practical hands-on consultations; and to learn the methods to add value to products through brand communication, e-marketing and online public relations.
Among the topics presented at the workshop were K-Fashion Design Trend Transition and Forecast by Hwang Seon-a, a Professor at Incheon University, Korea; Digital & Online Marketing Strategies by Hyung-taek, CEO of Market Cast; Power Brand & Concept Development Strategies by Yoon Sung-uk from Korea Fashion Association and How to Enter Global Market by Lee Eung-sam, the Executive Director of AMANEX. The attendees at the workshop were Malaysian companies running businesses in fashion apparels, ready-to-wear garments, shoes, handbags and jewelleries.
According to the World Trade Atlas statistic, South Korea’s total imports of apparels, footwear & bags as well as jewelries in 2015 totaled at US$16.13 billion. However, only 0.12% or US$19.68 million were imported from Malaysia. These figures show that Malaysia’s contribution to the South Korean fashion market is still relatively low despite the ample opportunities for Malaysian companies to make inroads into the country.
According to MATRADE’s Lifestyle Director Mr Abu Bakar Yusof, “This workshop is timely as it provides various tips and the know-how for participants to improve their brands straight from the Korean experts. This knowledge allows Malaysian companies to re-model the strategies adopted by the Korean fashion industry players and exposed them to the South Korean market too. We hope this initiative will be the catalyst for Malaysian companies to export more to South Korea.â€
