KUALA LUMPUR, 25 FEBRUARY 2025 (TUESDAY):  Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) reaffirms its steadfast commitment to driving the sustainable growth of Mid-Tier Companies (MTCs) through its flagship Mid-Tier Companies Development Programme (MTCDP).

MTCDP has been instrumental in empowering and guiding 348 MTCs across diverse sectors through tailored interventions in enhancing export competitiveness. This commitment is exemplified in today’s joint ceremony, which celebrates the achievements of 24 MTCs from the tenth wave of MTCDP and welcomes 22 new MTCs into the 11th wave cohort.

Dato’ Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican, Chairman of MATRADE, commended the remarkable resilience of Malaysian MTCs in navigating the increasing complexity of global challenges. “Our MTCs have consistently demonstrated their unwavering commitment to strengthening their global presence. Despite a challenging economic landscape, MTCDP alumni have successfully expanded into new export markets, promoted sustainable practices, embraced digitalization, and enhanced their global branding. This underscores MTCDP’s vital role as a high-impact exporter development programme, driving export growth and boosting global competitiveness.”

He further emphasized Malaysia’s commitment to enhancing regional trade as the country assumes the ASEAN Chairmanship in 2025. This leadership role will strategically position MTCs to leverage regional integration opportunities, expand intra-ASEAN trade, and strengthen collaborations with key international markets. These efforts will reinforce Malaysia’s position as a key driver of economic growth and resilience in the region, ensuring its businesses remain competitive and well-integrated into the global economy.

“MATRADE will persist in working closely with strategic partners in strengthening our MTCs presence internationally. This include the latest exchange of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Malaysian Consortium of Mid-Tier Companies (MCMTC). This joint partnership will be focussing on three key areas - business capacity building, expanding market access, and leadership in the Halal market” he added.

MCMTC was launched on 1st November 2017 by YB Dato’ Sri Mustapa Mohamed, then Minister at the Ministry of International Trade and Industry Malaysia (MITI), and comprises a group of like-minded industry leaders who believe in the power of strategic alliances for sustainable business growth.

The alliance of MTCs plays a crucial role in fostering broader and more sustainable business expansion by leveraging collective expertise and experience to forge strategic collaborations. The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with MATRADE marks a significant milestone, as most MCMTC members are graduates of the MTCDP. MCMTC President Mr. Martin Ang stated, “MCMTC has been working closely with MATRADE from day one, particularly during the COVID-19 period when we served as the 'Voice of the MTCs.' This MOU formalizes and strengthens collaborations between the public and private sectors. Just as the MTCDP empowered us to become global champions, we believe our consortium’s hard-won practical experience and expertise will help inspire and develop more global champions from Malaysia.”

MATRADE is committed to cultivating more export champions and supporting the government's efforts to rejuvenate the Malaysian economy as outlined in the MADANI Economy and New Industrial Master Plan (NIMP) 2030, which involves fostering growth in new sectors while ensuring socio-economic inclusiveness and sustainability.

Launched in 2014 as a high impact key initiative in the Malaysia Development Plan, the MTCDP aims to accelerate the export growth of MTCs, positioning them as global leaders. Building on the success of the programme, the Mid-Tier Ramp Up Programme was introduced in 2016 to further propel MTCs' exports and enhance their competitiveness in global markets. To date, 348 MTCs have benefited from the programme.

The MTCDP targets export-oriented MTCs with annual revenues ranging from RM50 million to RM500 million for manufacturing companies and RM20 million to RM500 million for service providers.
