Higher Trade Surplus of RM94.29 Billion in 2015

Malaysia’s total trade for 2015 grew by 1.2% to reach RM1.466 trillion, compared to RM1.448 trillion in the previous year. This was supported by stronger growth of 5.1% in the second half (H2) of 2015 following a negative growth of 2.8% in the first half (H1). This was the 9th year that trade had exceeded RM1 trillion.

The increase was contributed by higher trade with the People’s Republic of China (PRC), which increased by RM23.09 billion, ASEAN (↑RM12.38 billion), the United States of America (USA) (↑RM12.22 billion), the European Union (EU) (↑RM4.52 billion), Turkey (↑RM2.48 billion), India (↑RM1.59 billion), Switzerland (↑RM1.46 billion), Taiwan (↑RM1.29 billion) and Mexico (↑RM1.15 billion).

Exports grew by 1.9% despite the challenging economic environment, to reach a value of RM779.95 billion. Exports during H2 2015 were resilient and turned around sharply to record a 6.8% growth from -3.1% recorded in H1 2015.

Imports increased by RM2.71 billion, a marginal growth of 0.4% to RM685.65 billion. Faster growth of exports in 2015 resulted in a higher trade surplus of RM94.29 billion, representing Malaysia’s achievement of 18th consecutive year of trade surplus. The trade surplus registered a double-digit growth of 14.3%.

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 2016, KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) and Angkatan Koperasi Kebangsaan Malaysia Berhad (ANGKASA) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to encourage the participation in export among the country’s cooperatives (COOPs).

The move will boost the performance of local COOPs in not only the domestic market but international as well. Via the MoU, MATRADE and ANGKASA will be joining forces to develop Malaysian COOPs to be export-ready and to involve them in MATRADE’s export promotion activities. The collaboration will go on for a two-year period.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MATRADE Dato’ Dzulkifli Mahmud said, “This initiative is in line with MATRADE’s effort to push for more players in export. There are thousands of COOPs in the country and they definitely have a lot of potential to venture in export. Involvement of COOPs in export is quite common around the world and countries like the Netherlands and Korea have long been doing this.”

The MoU was signed by Dato’ Dzulkifli and the CEO of ANGKASA Tuan Hj Nasir Khan Yahya. “The COOP sector in Malaysia is huge and their participation in export will not only benefit their members who are Malaysians but the nation as a whole. With MATRADE’s as their export solution, I am confident Malaysia’s COOPs will stand to gain from this initiative,” Dato’ Dzulkifli opined.

Malaysian COOPs that are keen to start penetrating the global markets are encouraged to engage with MATRADE and ANGKASA and leverage on the 46 MATRADE offices around the world.

Thursday, January 14th, 2016, Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) through its Market Linkage Programme (MLP) has successfully assisted a Malaysian company, Eclimo Sdn Bhd, to venture into the Cambodian market with its environmentally-friendly and energy efficient electric scooter.

Through the MLP, Eclimo Sdn Bhd, which a Penang-based company, managed to introduce the Internet of Things (IoT) features developed by their own Malaysian talent. The IoT features had garnered the interest of the Cambodian commercial partners which led to the debut of the brand in Cambodia. One of the smart features for the e-scooter includes remote monitoring system which can help to reduce maintenance cost. The e-scooter was even endorsed by the Cambodian Minister of Environment, H.E. Dr Say Samal on September 10, 2015.

The MLP was introduced by MATRADE in effort to boost Malaysia’s high value sectors such as the Electrical and Electronics (E&E) industry. Via the MLP, MATRADE gets to link Malaysian companies with specific markets around the world and with international buyers, apart from providing technical and advisory services for the companies.

MATRADE’s Chief Executive Officer, Dato’ Dzulkifli Mahmud said, “Ramping up the performance of our high value sectors such as the E&E is one of the main focus for 2016. The Market Linkage Programme will greatly help Malaysian companies conclude more export deals through the strong connection of our Market Linkers appointed for the programme. This engagement will further complement and strengthen the efforts done by our 46 trade offices around the world.”

“We are extremely proud and happy for Eclimo’s success in Cambodia, especially when the technology used for the scooter is a Malaysian innovation. We hope they will continue to double up their efforts following this success to ensure they get to penetrate more markets around the ASEAN region,” he added.

In 2015, the MLP has linked industry players to RM1.27 billion worth of sales from various potential sectors such as in IC design, chip fabrication & test services, automation equipment and packaging solutions, personal computers, mobile board and systems, LED lighting solutions, IoT and solar as well as automotive electronics.

The MLP is just one of the many initiatives by MATRADE lined up for 2016. In total, there are 150 programmes of which 85 are trade promotion activities and 65 are Exporters Development Programme. These programmes will serve as an effective platform for Malaysian manufacturers and professional service providers to promote their world-class products and services globally, in expanding Malaysia’s export markets worldwide.

Cross-Border eCommerce Conference “Driving Export Business Through The Online Marketplace” and the First National eCommerce Council (NeCC) Meeting

1. The inaugural Cross-Border eCommerce Conference marked another milestone for the eTRADE programme implemented by the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE). The programme aims to promote the adoption of e-commerce among Malaysian businesses, in particular Malaysian SMEs, in their export efforts.

2. Through the eTRADE programme, for instance, Malaysian SMEs can now sell their products and services on several leading online marketplaces. At the conference, which was attended by more than 600 participants, representatives from Alibaba.com, TradeIndia.com, eBay.com, Amazon.com and JinBaoMen (M) Sdn Bhd highlighted the opportunities available on their online services for Malaysian exporters. MATRADE, in collaboration with these online marketplaces, will help Malaysian SMEs enhance their online presence through its eTRADE programme.

3. In his Keynote Address at the Conference, International Trade and Industry Minister YB Dato’ Sri Mustapa Mohamed stressed that the growth of eCommerce was vital to Malaysia’s economic future. "The Government is committed to encouraging the increase in the adoption of eCommerce. The 11th Malaysia Plan (RMK11) has set the eCommerce GDP contribution at 6.4% (RM114 billion) by 2020," he said. In 2014, eCommerce contribution to Malaysia’s GDP was 5.8% or RM63.8 billion.

4. The Minister urged local SMEs to leverage on the various initiatives introduced by the Government such as the e-Payment, MYCYBERSALE, e-Usahawan and eTRADE channels to boost their export options.

The Conference, which was organised by MATRADE in collaboration with MDeC, was supported by MITI, the National Chambers of Commerce and Industry Malaysia (NCCIM) and the Bumiputera Manufacturers and Services Industry Association of Malaysia (PPIPBM). It featured presentations by experts from AT Kearney, MDeC, CyberSecurity Malaysia and Prestige Communications on various topics, including e-Commerce global trends, security and fraud risks and aspects of digital marketing.

6. The Conference also witnessed the introduction of the inaugural eTRADE Achievement Award, which recognises the achievement of six Malaysian SMEs in the eTRADE programme. The award seeks to encourage more SMEs to emulate the winners.

7. Since the establishment of the eTRADE Programme on 1 October 2014, 426 Malaysian SMEs with wide range of products -- including food and beverages, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and toiletries, automotive, parts and components, machinery and equipment, apparel and chemical products -- have joined the programme. 8. In conjunction with the Conference, YB Dato' Sri Mustapa also chaired the inaugural meeting of the newly established inter-agency National eCommerce Council. The establishment of the Council was decided upon at the 27th MSC Implementation Council Meeting in October 2015 chaired by the Prime Minister of Malaysia. MITI was tasked to lead the Council, which will serve as a platform to guide the governance of the eCommerce industry.

9. At its meeting, the Council took stock of the existing eCommerce ecosystem and discussed issues and challenges faced by the industry. The participants included stakeholders from all sectors of the eCommerce industry.

Tuesday, January 19th, 2016 Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) as the national trade promotion agency took the initiative to build the awareness on export by organising the annual Export Day 2016. The event, which took at Menara MATRADE, featured the who’s who in export business and converged over 1,000 Malaysian companies particularly Small & Medium Enterprises (SMEs).

Themed as “Go the Extra Mile”, the event was officiated by the Minister of International Trade and Industry Dato’ Sri Mustapa Mohamed. Export Day 2016 (previously known as Exporters Forum) was attended by Malaysian exporters, youths in export, female entrepreneurs, online entrepreneurs as well as university and college students.

According to Chief Executive Officer of MATRADE Dato’ Dzulkifli Mahmud, “The objective of this event is to create a business platform for entrepreneurs and Malaysian companies to exchange information, share their success stories, ideas and challenges in exploring international markets.”

Export Day 2016 was timely with the materialisation of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) and the Trans Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPP). “With the AEC and TPP, Malaysian companies will enjoy greater market access and this offers them ample opportunities to venture into the global scene. Our Export Day 2016 will expose them to the know-how on export,” Dato’ Dzulkifli opined.

Export Day 2016, apart from encouraging Malaysian companies to export their products and services globally, allowed Malaysian companies to learn about MATRADE’s programmes and allowed them to search for information that can help grow their export business at MATRADE’s newly launched Integrated Centre for Export (ICE).

Export Day 2016 featured talks by agencies such as MIDF Amanah Investment Bank Berhad, EXIM Bank, SME Bank and Bank Negara. One of the key events at Export Day was the launch MATRADE’s e-Learning Programme. The programme is an online learning system developed to improve the knowledge and skills of SMEs in growing their export business. The tools and features incorporated in the e-Learning system will allow Malaysian SMEs, regardless of their locations, an access the training modules at their own convenience.

Another highlight at the event was the launch of a Special Edition Publication – “Exporting and International Trade” – held in conjunction with EXIM Bank 20th Anniversary. The book materialised with the advice and support by MATRADE and will be the first comprehensive book on exporting written from the Malaysia context. It covers topics such as idea generation, planning, setting up and managing a successful export business and exporting process as well as practical approaches in international trade.

Complementing the programme’s line-up were success stories sharing session by a number of local companies who have succeeded in export and three exchanges of documents marking MATRADE’s collaboration with Exim Bank and MIDF to establish a mutual beneficial relationship in export financing and an exchange of document with China Inspection Consultancy (M) Sdn Bhd and Lanzhou Logma eCommerce Technologies Co.Ltd. The exchange was on PRC Food Labelling consultancy and application in Malaysia.
