AYEC 2016: SETTING A BENCHMARK FOR YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS’ INITIATIVES IN ASEAN

SATURDAY, JULY 30, 2016 KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s aspiration in moving the young entrepreneurship agenda to greater heights came to fruition with the conclusion of ASEAN Young Entrepreneurs Carnival 2016 (AYEC 2016) at Menara MATRADE today. The event has congregated young entrepreneurs from all 10 ASEAN nations together, unified under the spirit of ASEAN Economic Community (AEC).

The AYEC 2016 embodied Malaysia’s pro-activeness in championing the young entrepreneurs’ agenda forward. The event was focused on key elements that are pivotal to the development of ASEAN young entrepreneurs. These elements include digitalisation and automation, start-up and e-commerce ecosystem, enhancement of intra-ASEAN trade, alternative access to financing, priority sectors of ASEAN and inculcating the best practices in business environment.

Co-organised by Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE), ASEAN Young Entrepreneurs Council and Malaysian Associations of ASEAN Young Entrepreneurs (MAAYE), the AYEC 2016 was a public-private sector initiative for young entrepreneurs since the inclusion of the young in entrepreneurship in the Economic pillar under the AEC.

According to MATRADE’s chief executive officer Dato’ Dzulkifli Mahmud, the event has provided a conducive platform for young entrepreneurs to invest in knowledge transfer and enhance their business network, with an aim to expanding and creating a strong foothold in ASEAN.

“This is the first time any ASEAN members has ever organised an event that is fully dedicated for young entrepreneurs and I am very proud that Malaysia was the one to debut AYEC. I hope this event will continue in years to come,” said Dato Dzulkifli.

“With an expo, forum and business awards held in two days under one roof, the AYEC has successfully provided a platform for our young entrepreneurs to learn from captains of industry from all around ASEAN,” he opined.

Sharing Dato’ Dzulikfli’s sentiment is Syed Nabil AlJefri, founder of MAAYE.
“This carnival is a useful platform to promote connectivity between young entrepreneurs in contributing to the intended single market. Besides, this Carnival serves as the starting point for the young entrepreneurs to galvanise and continue to contribute in innovation, creativity and inclusion of competitiveness entrepreneurship,” he said.

“Concerted efforts need to be streamlined among the ASEAN young entrepreneurs to further enhance human capital development and entrepreneurship. The development of various emerging industries such as services should have the young in the mainstream. The technology disruption in driving the next industry revolution will provide a valuable lane for young entrepreneurs to gain market access opportunities and spur economic growth for ASEAN,” he added.

The AYEC 2016 was supported by Ministry of International Trade & Industry and the ASEAN Business Advisory Council (ASEAN-BAC) and took place at MATRADE Exhibition and Convention Centre on 29th and 30th July 2016. The 1st Annual General Meeting of ASEAN Young Entrepreneurs Council was also held at the sidelines of the Carnival today.

The Carnival has attracted over 5,000 visitors who were only entrepreneurs but investors, bankers, students, youth organisations, government ministries, foreign embassies, trade and business associations, business councils as well local business with interests in youth development and entrepreneurship.

MALAYSIA CHAMPIONS ASEAN YOUNG ENTREPRENEURSHIP AGENDA THROUGH THE 1st ASEAN YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS
CARNIVAL 2016

FRIDAY, JULY 29, 2016 KUALA LUMPUR: The opening of ASEAN Young Entrepreneurs Carnival 2016 (AYEC 2016) at Menara MATRADE today marks a historic moment for Malaysia in spearheading the initiative to drive the ASEAN young entrepreneurship agenda forward.

The inaugural event – a collaborative effort between Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) and Malaysian Association of ASEAN Young Entrepreneurs (MAAYE) – is also the first public-private sector initiative for young entrepreneurs since the inclusion of the young in entrepreneurship under the ASEAN Economic pillar in the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC). The event is supported by Ministry of International Trade and Industry and ASEAN Young Entrepreneurs Council.

Officiated by Minister of International Trade and Industry YB Dato’ Sri Mustapa Mohamed, the AYEC 2016 is also the first congregation of young entrepreneurs for all 10 ASEAN member states. The programme is the only ASEAN-mandated event under the Economic pillar hosted outside of Laos (ASEAN’s Chair for 2016) and sees the gathering of young entrepreneurs from all over ASEAN under one roof for two days starting today until tomorrow.

During the opening ceremony, two exchange of Memorandum of Understandings (MoUs) are witnessed. The first MoU – Incubator Programme for ASEAN Export Champions (Program Inkubator Jaguh Eksport ASEAN Usahawan Muda) – is a collaboration between MATRADE and MAAYE in creating ASEAN export champions among young entrepreneurs from around the Malaysian states. The incubator programme aims to groom entrepreneurs and first-time state-level exporters into successful global traders. The initiative puts strong emphasis on developing entrepreneurs who are eCommerce-ready, utilising digital platforms as a vehicle to ease market access, creating a business ecosystem that is driven by innovation and technology as well as pushing for better understanding in branding, packaging, marketing and media relations – all of which will ultimately translate into export sales.

The second MoU, Gabungan Usahawan Parlimen Jeli untuk Program Jaguh Eksport ASEAN, involves MAAYE and Jeli-based entrepreneurs. The MoU is to commemorate the participation of entrepreneurs in Jeli, Kelantan as the pilot project for the Incubator Programme for ASEAN Export Champions.

With three main components namely a forum, an exhibition and award ceremony, AYEC 2016 is expected to host a total of 5,000 people from key industries such as e-commerce, ICT, New Technology, Tourism, retail, logistics and the ASEAN Priority Integration Sectors.

One of the key highlights of the AYEC 2016 is the forum which features more than 30 speakers among who include Minister of Youth and Sports Malaysia, YB Khairy Jamaluddin; Secretary General of Treasury, Ministry of Finance Malaysia, Tan Sri Dr. Irwan Serigar Abdullah; and Co-Chair of Asean Business Advisory Council Tan Sri Dr. Munir Majid, just to name a few.

The topics at the forum revolve around sustainable development, human capital development, intellectual property and consumer protection, responsible business practices and many more.

According to MATRADE’s chief executive officer Dato’ Dzulkifli Mahmud, AYEC 2016 is conducive to enhance our young entrepreneurs’ business network in exploring the ASEAN market. “With a market size of 625 million people, AYEC 2016 will be able to improve people-to-people connectivity and access to market and technology between entrepreneurs, towards a more connected and competitive single market. MATRADE as Malaysia’s export promotion agency believes that this initiative is effective in connecting local young entrepreneurs with the world,” Dato’ Dzulkifli says.

Founder of MAAYE, Mr Syed Nabil Aljeffri mentions, “ASEAN has a youthful population, with a growing consumer market and the economy is set to benefit from such demographic dividends in the short term. We believe that the event is timely as the young in entrepreneurship can drive innovation, creativity and digitalisation as key elements included in the new AEC 2025 Blueprint.”

With more than 70 per cent of the ASEAN population reported to be below 45 years of age, youth forms a big part of the total human capital. Already the third largest labour force in the world, ASEAN has the fastest growing literacy and IT penetration rate in the world. Currently, the region is already the seventh largest economy in the world and is set to be the fourth largest by 2050.

Tuesday, 12 July 2016, London: Mirus Aircraft Seating has today announced the first of its international expansion plans, with a South East Asian subsidiary being established, following discussions with Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) and the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA).  This will make Malaysia the company’s launchpad for ASEAN and beyond.

The innovative British company revealed in April at the Aircraft Interiors International (AIX) in Hamburg, that its launch customer for the new Hawk short-range economy seat is AirAsia, with whom it has secured an unprecedented deal to retrofit 8 existing Airbus A320’s and all new A320neo aircraft for the award-winning low-cost carrier.  In total this is some 312 aircraft.

The new, wholly-owned subsidiary, Mirus Aircraft Seating Malaysia SDN BHD, will initially act as an After Sales Service Centre, providing technical support to AirAsia as well as other customers in the region and will allow the company to grow in order to maximise its geographical advantage.  Looking more long-term, it is envisaged that the Malaysian base will become a duplicate production facility and centre of excellence for projects in South East Asia.  This would further improve lead times and lower costs.

Phil Hall, CEO at Mirus said “I’m really happy we’re able to announce this significant milestone at Farnborough.  It’s an exciting new step in the Mirus story and will demonstrate to customers our commitment to providing them with outstanding support”.  Mirus are at Farnborough Air Show with the Hawk seats displayed as part of the MATRADE Malaysian Pavilion (Hall 3/D70).

In the future, it is hoped that Mirus could open similar international hubs to service customers in other parts of the globe.
