Monday, March 28th, 2016, Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia External Trade Development Trade Corporation (MATRADE) in a statement announced the launch of Malaysia Aerospace Industry Association (MAIA) today as an initiative to promote the integration of Malaysia's aerospace players. This initiative is key to delivering the industry insights to policy makers in driving the sector to greater heights.

The launch, which was officiated by YB Dato' Sri Mustapa Mohamed, Minister of International Trade and Industry (MITI), is aimed at strengthening Malaysia's position in the global market and to develop its status as the aerospace hub in Asia, particularly in the ASEAN region. MATRADE as the national export promotion agency will play a main role as the association's lead facilitator.

The association was established as a non-governmental organisation and functions to support and represent the voice of all Malaysian companies in the aerospace sector. Other objectives of MAIA include assisting Malaysian businesses to grow and access into new markets, providing services and networking for industry members and championing the aerospace industry's interest with focus on public policy development.

MAIA will be led by Mr Naguib Mohd Nor, the Chief Executive Officer of Strand Aerospace Malaysia Sdn Bhd who will be the association's pro-tem president.

The pro-tem committee of MAIA comprises top management of member companies who are entrusted to draw the guidelines for the group with an emphasis on capacity development and international market penetration.

MAIA's establishment is also an initiative to assist the National Aerospace Industry Coordinating Office (NAICO) which is spearheaded by MITI in overseeing the implementation of the Malaysian Aerospace Industry Blueprint 2030, growth of the aerospace ecosystem and its infrastructure as well as the participation of local Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in the aerospace industry.

MAIA will represent Malaysian companies of all sizes in the aerospace-related civil, defense and space industries. This include its sub-segments namely aerospace manufacturing, aerospace design engineering, avionics & systems integration, maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) and aerospace training & education.

The launch of MAIA was attended by 101 representatives from 53 companies and 25 representatives from 10 Ministries and Agencies.

Malaysia, in moving towards a developed nation status, is putting all it forces in place to drive the local aerospace industry as a high-value sector for the country. The total revenue generated from the Malaysia's aerospace industry has grown tremendously from a mere RM0.9 billion in 1998 to RM11.8 billion in 2014.

In terms of size, MRO remains the largest contributor to the aerospace industry revenue accounting for 55 per cent of revenue share. This is followed by aero-manufacturing which makes up 33 per cent of the industry revenue. In the Malaysian Aerospace Industry Blueprint 2030, five focus areas have been identified -- MRO, aero-manufacturing, systems integration, engineering design services and education and training.

In 2015, Malaysia's exports of aerospace products recorded a significant increase of 44.7 per cent, to RM4.2 billion from RM2.9 billion in 2014. Meanwhile, imports had decreased by 33.5 per cent to RM10 billion from RM15.1 billion in 2014.

There are more than 150 aerospace companies in Malaysia and last year the investments in the aerospace industry had reached RM4.7 billion. The industry has also provided 20,000 jobs -- mostly in the small and medium-sized enterprises.

This year, MIHAS has partnered with the Department of Trade and Industry of South Africa to further strengthen the trade relations between both the countries. As the Guest Country, South Africa will be exhibiting their Halal food and beverages as well as skincare products at MIHAS 2016.

South Africa has a vibrant Halal market driven by more than 500 Halal certified companies. Saturday, March 19th, 2016, Kuala Lumpur: A total of 65 Malaysian companies concluded their participation at Gulfood 2016 recently with total sales of RM556.42 million being registered throughout the five-day event. Gulfood 2016 which took place at Dubai International Convention & Exhibition Centre (DIDEC) Dubai, was spearheaded by Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE).

This year marked Malaysia’s 12th participation in Gulfood and throughout the years, the event has offered Malaysian companies a platform to showcase a wide variety of food and beverages (F&B) products such as confectioneries, food ingredients, sauces and paste, ready-to-eat meals, frozen food items and palm oil products.

The outcome of Malaysia’s participation in Gulfood remains bullish amid the low crude oil prices affecting the region. During the event, Malaysian companies received a total of 7,544 trade enquiries from various potential buyers ranging from food distributors, procurement centres from within the United Arab Emirates, the neighbouring Gulf countries, the Middle East, the Sub-Continent countries, Central Asia as well as Africa. This year’s event was attended by more than 5,000 exhibitors from over 120 countries.

While newcomers were able to establish new contacts to secure orders, the repeat participants had utilised their involvement to launch their new innovative halal F&B products and renew export orders from existing clients as well as strengthen their brand presence in the market.

For over a decade, MATRADE has been entrusted to lead the participation of competitive and innovative Malaysian F&B companies in the event. Complementing the participation of the companies, MATRADE had also brought together a number of Government agencies such the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA) and the Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC). Both agencies used the platform to promote the cluster of industries under their purview.

According to the regional financial advisory entity, Alpen Capital in its Gulf Corporation Council (GCC) Food Industry Report, the region’s packaged food market will continue to boom due to the rising demand for healthy and international food from a growing base of expatriates as well as young consumers. Halal food imports into the GCC region are expected to double from US$25.8 billion in 2010 to US$53.1 billion by 2020, registering a 7.5 percent compounded annual growth rate (CAGR). Another similar entity, Al Masah Capital has also noted that the GCC food service market was valued US$18.8 billion in 2014 and is projected to grow at a CAGR of 6.8 per cent to reach US$24.5 billion by 2018.

Gulfood can be dubbed as one of the largest specialised food, beverages and equipment show in the world. Focusing on the global HALAL market, Gulfood is an ideal avenue for Malaysian companies to not only promote their halal ‘Made in Malaysia’ products but to also increase their market visibility in the Gulf region, Sub-Continent countries as well as Africa.

The Battersea Project involves the development of a 39-acre Battersea Power Station in London, led by a consortium of three Malaysian companies -- SP Setia, Sime Darby and the Employees Provident Fund. The project is undertaken by a British-based company, BPSDC and is expected to lead to the creation of 3,500 new homes, shops, cafés, restaurants and offices, establishment of a new 6-acre riverside park with the fully restored Power Station at its heart to be open for the public. This effort is considered an ideal and cost-effective platform for the local companies to venture globally.

Malaysian companies are encouraged to take the opportunity during the presence of high profile oil and gas companies in this INSP and expand their global market share and explore any potential of joint-ventures.
