COCONUT FIBRE
Coconut fibre or coir is obtained from the fibrous husk (mesocarp) of the coconut.
Coconut fibre has high lignin content and thus a low cellulose content, as a result of
which it is resilient, strong and highly durable.
COMBINE HEAT AND POWER (CHP)
A system in which the heat associated with electricity generation is also used for space
heating or process heat. In this way the overall efficiency of the process in terms of the
proportion of the energy in the biomass fuel that ismade use of is increased considerably.
Also known as co-generation.
DIRECT COMBUSTION
Refers to burning biomass directly in a furnace to produce heat and electricity. Steam
produced from heat of combustion powers a turbine that turns a generator to produce
electricity.
DRIED LONG FIBRE
Palm fibre is extracted from oil palm’s vascular
bundles in the empty fruit bunch (EFB). Technology can
convert EFB to dried long fibre and short dried
fibre. Dried long fibre has a length of 5 - 15cm with
moisture content around 12 - 15% and oil content less
than 1%.
DRIED SHORT FIBRE
The dried short fibre is less than 1cm in length with
moisture content around 12 - 15% and oil content less
than 1%. It can be processed into biomass pellets and
used in wood plastic composites.
EMPTY FRUIT BUNCH (EFB)
EFB is oil palm biomass resulting from the palm-oil
extraction and milling process. EFB is both very fibrous
and wet. It is conveniently collected and available for
exploitation at palm oil mills.
