Speeches 2015

YB Dato’ Noraini Ahmad,

Chairman of MATRADE,

YB Datuk Ir. Haji Hamim Samuri & YB Dato' Lee Chee Leong,

Deputy Ministers of International Trade and Industry (MITI),

Distinguished Guests,

Members of the Media,

Ladies & Gentlemen.

Bismillahirrahmannirrahim.

Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh and Good Morning.

2. As you are all aware, Malaysia’s economic vision is to become a high-income nation by 2020 with a per capita gross national income of USD 15,000. A total of 3.3 million new jobs is expected to be created. Last year, the Prime Minister, YAB Dato’ Sri Najib Tun Razak, announced that for the first time, Malaysia’s per capita gross national income has exceeded USD 10,000. However, much more needs to be done to achieve the 2020 target.

Ladies and gentlemen,

3. I was here in this very room last Thursday, in a press conference on Malaysia’s trade performance in 2014. While our export performance was better than expected at 6.4 per cent growth, we expect 2015 to be a more challenging year, particularly in the light of moderating world growth and declining oil prices. Many initiatives have been put in place to sustain and grow small and medium enterprises and these are implemented through various agencies and Ministries.

4. The programme I am about to launch today is different. It is targeted at developing Mid-Tier companies, which are companies with turnover from RM50 to RM500 million in the Manufacturing Sector and RM20-RM500 million in the Services Sector.

5. This is one of the government’s high impact initiatives to accelerate the growth of Malaysian businesses to the global forefront. It is meant to value-add and complement existing policies that are aimed at enhancing the competitiveness of Malaysian companies, especially exporters.

6. It is important to note that there are only 9,900 Mid Tier Companies in Malaysia compared with 662,939 SMEs. Mid-Tier Companies make up about 1 per cent of all establishments in Malaysia but they contribute 30 per cent to the GDP and 22 per cent to the work force.

7. The Mid Tier Programme will be implemented in 8 waves over 8 years until 2021. It is hoped that the programme will spur Malaysia’s economic landscape, boost global opportunities and heighten brand visibility of Malaysian products and services. Among the expected outcomes is the generation of :

• 480 high growth companies

• 60 Regional champions

• GNI to expand by RM6 billion

• 21,000 high income jobs in the broader economy

• More than RM15 billion in exports

In addition this, it is expected that efficiency and productivity will be enhanced as these companies will be linked with technology partners. Investments and joint ventures are expected to be generated and international business networks will span over more markets.

8. I have interacted with the 44 participants from Wave 1 a little earlier in the day and they have shared their take on the programme. Many have expressed appreciation for it and in fact, would like to continue on the programme. Despite the multisectoral selection, many found the programme to be very focused as it is customized to their individual needs. They have found the immersion activities to be useful and this has helped develop firmer partnerships with better allies abroad. My congratulations to these companies, who will be graduating today.

Ladies and gentlemen,

9. It is important for me to stress that this programme is an investment by the Government and thus it is imperative that the private sector be fully committed to it to ensure its success. I believe that Mid-tier companies have what it takes to be winners beyond our borders. Therefore I urge all future participants to take note of this and give MATRADE your full commitment.

10. On that note, ladies and gentlemen, I hereby launch the mid-tier companies’ development programme. To the MTCs, I wish you every success in the years ahead.

Bismillah

We are indeed very pleased to have all of you here who are mostly CEO of Mid Tier Companies to join this event and thus to find out more about The Mid-Tier Companies Development Program, which is undertaken by Matrade in collaboration with EPU and AIM.

Ladies and Gentleman,

The Mid-Tier Companies Development Program aims to identify, develop and nurture Mid-Tier Companies to become more resilient and competititive, both regionally and internationally.

Hence, Once companies are selected and recruited to be in this program, they will have the advantage to

1- gain access to global network of potential business patners and distributors;

2- acquire a better and more informed choice of prioritized [ prior ritized ] markets through introductions to reliable market intelligence, business support tools and international experts;

3- experience enhanced knowledge on targeted markets and industry sectors from reputable sources;

4- obtain access to credible local and international financial institutions as well as private equity firms;

and

5- benefit from a network of technology and innovation partners with worldwide recognition.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Completing the Mid-Tier Companies Development Program is a challenging task, but its success is not impossibe.

For that, I must congratulate the hard-working team in Matrade for their persistence and determination, although I am sure there must be some frustrating moments during the beginning of this Program.
