MATRADE Leads the Way in Driving Trade Opportunities at Expo 2025 Osaka
OSAKA, JAPAN, 22 APRIL 2024 (TUESDAY): The Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE), the national trade promotion agency under the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI), has successfully organised more than 100 business meetings in a span of two days during the first week of the Business Programme at the Malaysia Pavilion during Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan. The programme, conducted in conjunction with MITI Week, witnessed 22 Malaysian companies securing more than RM40 million in export and investment, setting a positive tone for Malaysia’s participation in the 26-week event.
MATRADE is the lead for all the Business Programmes that will be held during the six-month period of Expo, which commenced on 13 April 2025. MATRADE will be implementing the Business Programmes with the support from other MITI agencies, especially Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA), as well as other Government Ministries and agencies. The initiative is part of the government’s broader strategy to unlock RM13 billion in potential trade and investment by leveraging Malaysia’s participation in one of the world’s most prestigious international expositions.
The Malaysian companies involved in the Business Programmes were from key sectors including electrical & electronics (E&E), life sciences, renewable energy, oil and gas as well as food and beverages. Commenting on the successful start of the Business Programme, MATRADE Deputy Chief Executive Officer (Export Acceleration), Mr. Abu Bakar Yusof, said, “The strong interest and promising outcomes achieved during the first week reflect Malaysia’s growing reputation as a trusted trade and investment partner. Through strategic collaborations and targeted promotions, we aim to accelerate greater market access and commercial opportunities for Malaysian businesses, not only in Japan, but also in other emerging and fast-growing markets around the world.”
The business programmes for the first week of Expo 2025 Osaka constituted two business matching sessions held on 15 and 18 April 2025, as well as a Business Seminar on Malaysia’s Halal Industry on 17 April. The seminar featured expert speakers from the industry as well as representatives from participating MITI agencies, including MATRADE, Halal Development Corporation Berhad (HDC), Malaysian Industrial Development Finance Berhad (MIDF) and Export-Import Bank of Malaysia Berhad (EXIM Bank).
The business programmes have already attracted interest from Japanese and international buyers, further positioning Malaysia as a reliable and competitive trading nation in high-growth and high-impact sectors such as halal, E&E, and green technology.
MATRADE will continue to spearhead business programmes at the Malaysia Pavilion throughout the Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, working in close collaboration with various ministries, government agencies and state governments. These efforts aim to elevate Malaysia’s global trade presence and foster long-term, sustainable economic partnerships across diverse sectors.
