Malaysian Exhibitors Achieved Record-Breaking Sales at the Farnborough International Airshow
KUALA LUMPUR, August 20 (TEUSDAY) - Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE), in collaboration with the National Aerospace Industry Corporation Malaysia (NAICO Malaysia) organised the participation of 15 Malaysian exhibitors under the National Pavilion at the Farnborough International Airshow (FIA) 2024.
FIA, which was held in the United Kingdom (UK) from 22 to 26 July 2024 garnered sales of RM635.9 million, an increase of 11.05% compared to the previous edition in 2022. Among the sectors that recorded potential business during this event included aero-manufacturing, engineering and design services, maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) services and training.
According to YBhg. Datuk Mohd Mustafa Abdul Aziz, MATRADE's Chief Executive Officer, the demand for Malaysia's aerospace products is on an upward trend as exports grew 7.8% to reach RM2.95 billion in the first six months of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023.
Parts of planes or helicopters comprised the largest share of exports, making up 78.8% of the total value or RM2.31 billion. This segment also witnessed an increase of 18.4% during this stipulated period. Overall, the major destinations for Malaysia’s aerospace products for the first half of 2024 are China, United States of America, Indonesia, Singapore and the UK.
YBhg. Datuk Mohd Mustafa Abdul Aziz pointed out that FIA 2024 presented a unique opportunity for exhibitors to connect with key players in the global aerospace industry whereby primes such as Airbus and Boeing as well as leading Tier-1 and Tier-2 companies were present at this event. “By actively engaging with foreign buyers through MATRADE’s pre-arranged programme, Malaysian exhibitors showcased their capabilities at FIA and established valuable partnerships that will lead to better integration into the global aerospace supply chain,” he said.
Overall, a total of 132 business meetings were organised between Malaysian companies and foreign buyers during FIA 2024. In addition, the Malaysian Aerospace Industry Seminar organised by NAICO Malaysia strengthened Malaysia’s brand as a strategic sourcing partner in Southeast Asia that is well integrated in the global aerospace supply chain.
“Our strong performance at FIA 2024 demonstrated the competitiveness of the Malaysian aerospace companies,” said YBhg. Datuk Mohd Mustafa Abdul Aziz. Echoing the significance of Malaysia’s participation on the global stage, Prof. Ts. Shamsul Kamar Abu Samah, Chief Executive Officer of NAICO Malaysia, noted that the participation in the Farnborough Airshow 2024 marks an important moment for Malaysia's aerospace industry, as this platform allowed Malaysia to showcase its advancements, forge global partnerships and attract investments that will drive us toward our vision of becoming a global aerospace hub.
“Our engagement here shows the commitment to innovation and collaboration, driving industrial progress in line with the 12th Malaysia Plan (RMKe-12), the Malaysian Aerospace Industry Blueprint 2030 (MAIB 2030) and the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 (NIMP 2030)”, Prof. Ts. Shamsul Kamar Abu Samah added.
This year, MATRADE also collaborated with the Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) and Malaysia Airlines, which served as the official airline for the Malaysian delegation at FIA 2024.
The Malaysia Pavilion was officiated by His Excellency Dato' Zakri Jaafar, the High Commissioner of Malaysia to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and YAB Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari, the Chief Minister of Selangor on 22 July 2024. The opening ceremony was joined by exhibitors at the Malaysia Pavilion, which included NAICO Malaysia, Invest Selangor, the Malaysia Aerospace Industry Association (MAIA) and participating Malaysian aerospace companies.
In addition, the Malaysia Pavilion hosted the visit by General Tan Sri Dato' Sri Mohd Asghar Khan bin Goriman Khan, Chief of the Royal Malaysian Air Force, YBhg. Datuk Hanafi Sakri, MITI Deputy Secretary General (Industry), YBhg. Datuk Bahria Mohd Tamil, MITI Deputy Secretary General (Investment & Management) and YBrs. Ng Sze Han, Selangor Investment, Trade and Mobility Exco.
