CHENGDU GAINING STRONGER APPEAL AMONG MALAYSIAN EXPORTERS

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 21, 2015, KUALA LUMPUR : More Malaysian companies are strategically moving into the emerging second tier cities in China such as Chengdu to expand their export share in this economic powerhouse. This is reflected by the participation of 23 Malaysian companies in the Western China (Sichuan) Import Expo & International Investment Fair (WCIIF) slated for October 23 to 27, 2015 in Chengdu, China.
Spearheaded by Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE), WCIIF is a continuation of MATRADE’s recent export promotion programme at the China ASEAN Expo (CAEXPO) in Nanning, also a second tier city in China.
Congregating under the Malaysia Pavilion, the Malaysian companies will exhibit products ranging from food items, healthcare to Child Intelligence Test Services. Complementing the exhibition are 60 sessions of one-on-one business meetings arranged by MATRADE for Malaysian exhibitors with their future Chinese counterparts.
According to Mr. Ong Yew Chee, Director of Business Services and Building Materials Section at MATRADE, WCIIF will provide a platform to further promote Malaysia’s exports to China, which is currently Malaysia’s top trading partner. “We can also leverage on “China’s Go West Policy” to promote the image of Malaysia as a reliable source of imports of high quality products and services to the Western part of China,” he said.
Chengdu is one of the promising second tier markets for Malaysian exporters. In 2014, Malaysia’s exports to Chengdu recorded a growth of 34.7% to USD3.17 billion while imports from Chengdu were valued at USD1.88 billion. For the first eight months of 2015, Malaysia’s exports to Chengdu were recorded at USD0.74 billion, while imports at USD1.06 billion.
Chengdu is part of the China’s Sichuan Province. The Province in its totality has a population of 80 million people with Chengdu being its capital city. The huge market coupled with the strong growth per capita income in recent years has resulted in growing demands for middle to high-end lifestyle products and services in the region.
WCIIF is one of the avenues for Malaysian companies to showcase their products and services and access the Western China markets. The participation in the exhibition will further strengthen the ties in trade and investment between Malaysia and China. This is essential for Malaysia to achieve the Malaysia-China 2017’s trade target of USD160 billion.
