PART 1
CE-Marking

the product will be used. In the CBI’s AccessGuide database you
can find a document describing the product range of all the relevant
directives. Please note that your product could be covered by more
than one directive. For instance, if you produce packaging machinery,
both the Machinery Directive (98/37/EC) and the Low Voltage Directive
(73/23/EEC) apply. If your product is not covered by one of the
directives, you may under no circumstances affix the CE-marking!
Bear in mind that new directives are being developed regularly and it
is important to keep in step with them.
STEP 2:
Applying Standards
The next step in the process is getting your product to meet the essential
requirements laid down for it in the directives. As a manufacturer, you
are free to choose how you go about this. The standards mentioned
above can help ensure correct implementation. National standards
– and even more importantly harmonised standards – are based on
a lot of experience on how to manufacture safe products. On top of
that, with harmonised standards you’ll be a step ahead in terms of
conformity. In the next part of this series, CBI will look at the next steps
in the CE-marking procedure.
Step 1
Determine which Directive(s) apply, if any
Step 2
Check which standard(s) apply
Step 3
Find out whether the product complies with the requirements of the Directive
and carry out a risk assessment
Step 4
Compose a Technical (Construction) File
Step 5
Compose a User Manual and check on compliance with the Directives
Step 6
Compose an EC Declaration of Conformity
Step 7
Affix the CE mark to the product
