PART 5
CE-Marking
19
I
n the previous four parts of this series, we looked at the first
six steps you have to take as a manufacturer in order to CE-mark
your product(s). The final step in the process, Step 7, is a mere
finishing touch compared to the other steps: affixing the CE-mark.
By the time you’re ready for Step 7, your product complies with all the
requirements laid out in the relevant EU directives. By affixing the
CE- mark, you declare to all parties involved – not least to consumers
– that your product conforms to all applicable provisions. The mark
also implies that this conformity has been established through the
appropriate assessment procedures. You’re now free to launch your
product on the European Union market. And that, after all, is the goal
of CE-marking.
The CE-mark is an essential piece of information, both for EU member
states’ authorities as well as for other relevant parties, such as
distributors, consumers and other users. Once a product is CE-marked,
EU member states are not allowed to prevent its placement on their
markets. Neither are they allowed to remove the product from their
markets. This can only be done if there is proof that the product does
not comply with the directives.
The CE-mark may only be affixed to the following products:
• All new products, whether manufactured in the member states or
in third countries;
• Used and second-hand products imported from third countries;
• Substantially modified products that are subjected to the directives
as new products.
Please note that affixing the CE-mark to products that do not fall under
the scope of a directive is prohibited.
