KUALA LUMPUR, 18 MARCH 2026 (WEDNESDAY) – Malaysia’s furniture industry is strengthening its global footprint by expanding into emerging and high-potential markets such as Chile, as part of ongoing efforts to diversify export destinations. Despite evolving global trade dynamics, Malaysian furniture manufacturers continue to demonstrate resilience by capitalising on new demand patterns and positioning themselves in higher-value market segments.

As trade routes shift, MATRADE is calling on Malaysian furniture makers to strategically target emerging markets such as Chile. By leading with sustainable practices and superior design, our companies can establish a significant competitive edge in the region.

Strategic Opportunities for Malaysian Exporters

Dining and living room sets are the top-selling furniture categories in Chile, with a marked consumer preference for solid wood sets characterised by premium finishes. As urban living spaces shrink, there is a critical surge in demand for "Small Living" solutions tailored for apartments under 40 sqm, making multifunctional pieces like extendable tables and sofa beds essential. This shift toward utility is complemented by a strong aesthetic leaning toward minimalist and "Japandi" styles (Japanese-Nordic mix), where light wood textures and neutral palettes are the preferred choice for modern interiors.

Chile: Gateway to the Latin American Furniture Market

With a population of 19 million, Chile has emerged as a resilient and expanding hub for the Latin American furniture trade. In 2025, Chile furniture imports surged to USD 898.5 million, marking an 8.16% annual increase driven largely by rapid urbanisation and the rise of apartment living in major cities. This shift toward compact, urban lifestyles has created a high demand for functional, space-efficient pieces. Malaysian manufacturers have successfully captured the mid-to-high market segment by offering high-quality solid wood furniture that balances premium craftsmanship with attractive pricing.

Malaysia currently stands as Chile’s 10th largest global furniture supplier and the second largest within ASEAN, a position bolstered by significant trade advantages. The Malaysia-Chile Free Trade Agreement and the CPTPP provide Malaysian exports with strategic zero-tariff access, making their products highly competitive against global rivals. Furthermore, Malaysia’s manufacturing strengths are perfectly aligned with current Chilean consumer trends, which favour sustainable materials, multifunctional utility, and the perennially popular Nordic-inspired aesthetic.

MATRADE Support and Industry Engagement

MATRADE will continue to support Malaysian furniture exporters through market intelligence, international business matching, and participation in global trade exhibitions.

To further strengthen Malaysia’s presence in the Chilean market, MATRADE Santiago will actively promote the furniture sector through its eBizLink 2026 Programme, which facilitates virtual business matching between Malaysian exporters and Chilean buyers, distributors and specialty furniture retailers. The programme enables Malaysian manufacturers to connect directly with key importers, interior designers and retail chains in Chile, while exploring opportunities in regional growth cities such as Concepción and Antofagasta.

Digitalisation remains a key enabler in accelerating exporters’ adoption of cross border digital trade and e-Commerce business. MATRADE is ramping up initiatives through digital solutions such as MADANI Digital Trade, eBizLink and MATRADE Digital Learning by enhancing digital connectivity, trade facilitation, market access and capacity-building programmes to enable MSMEs to participate more effectively in cross-border digital trade.

To capitalise on these opportunities, MATRADE is reaffirming its commitment to Malaysian exporters by providing "on-the-ground" support in Chile through office in Santiago providing industry players with real-time market intelligence and critical updates.
