Top 5 Import Markets within ASEAN
Benefitting from greater cross border investments,
more inter-company linkages and outsourcing
activities as well as growing trading activities within
ASEAN, total trade with ASEAN in 2013 expanded
4.8% to RM374.71 billion. ASEAN accounted for
27.4% of Malaysia’s total trade, and was the largest
regional trading partner.
Exports to ASEAN increased, expanding its share
from 26.8% in the previous year to 28%. Within
ASEAN, exports growth were registered with Lao PDR
expanding by 81%; Brunei, 21.3%; Indonesia, 19.9%;
Vietnam, 12.9%; Thailand, 6.1%; Singapore, 5.1%;
and Myanmar, 3.9%.
Increase in exports to ASEAN were contributed mainly
by higher exports of refined petroleum products,
electronic integrated circuits, manufacturers of metal
of alloyed aluminium plates, sheets or strips, as well
as machinery & equipment including air conditioning
equipment, pumps, compressors, fans, centrifuges
and parts, specialised machineries for E & E, rubber,
plastic and food processing as well as engineering
equipment for civil works and mining industries.
Imports from ASEAN expanded by 2.1% accounting
for 26.6% of total imports. Main imports from ASEAN
were refined petroleum products, E & E products as
well as chemicals and chemical products.
E&E exports, which accounted for 35.4% of Malaysia’s
total exports to Singapore, rose by 10.2% in 2013.
Electronic integrated circuits were the leading exports,
valued at RM15.62 billion or 43.9% share of total E&E
exports to Singapore. Exports of refined petroleum
products saw growth of 3.5% or RM945.6 million to
RM27.65 billion, accounting for 27.5% of total exports
to Singapore.
Malaysia’s imports from Singapore decreased by 0.3%
to RM80.23 billion, accounting for 12.4% of Malaysia’s
total imports. Major imports from Singapore were
refined petroleum products mainly motor fuel; E&E
products consisting parts for electronic integrated
circuits, microprocessor & controller, parts and
accessories for computers and chemicals & chemical
products.
