Reaping Outcomes
from Focus on Services
Malaysia’s thrust in promoting export of the services sector began almost
ten years ago with the realisation that as a developing nation, Malaysia
could not afford to rely only on exports of merchandise and commodity.
The world’s export of services then was expanding at a fast pace and this
sector was viewed as a source for export revenue generation.
The services sector is expected to continue as the catalyst for growth of
Malaysia’s export. Under Malaysia’s Economic Transformation Programme,
the services sector is expected to contribute 65% of Malaysia’s GDP. In
2013, export of services sector increased by 7.2% to RM125.5 billion from
RM117 billion in 2012.
